new trakka

Hello, I have just purchased a new syncro trakka. I have been watching this vehicle for 6 months or so. I caught up with the owners recently and asked them if they were considering selling it would they let me know.

A week later they did just that!

She is an 89 Trakka. It has done 96Ks always garaged, full srvice history. Stored for 7 years in Freo and serviced 4 times a year by a local VW dealership during that time. The vehicle was purchased originaly by a couple from H Kong and used rarely when they were in WA on holidays. She was the show car for Trakka so has a lot of features you would not normally find (I may be corrected on this) ie. leather seats, armrests, cruise control, electric windows, central locking, electric arial, diff lock, sunvisor, stone sheild on windscreen, car bra, sunroof in pop top, side skirts (body kit). A lot of this stuff is going to be bloody useless off road but I will deal with that as the need arises.

I take posession of my new car in about 3 weeks. I have to sell my old trakka to pay for it. Suffice to say I paid a fair bit for it but I think she is good one.

Can someone tell me if this was a one off vehicle or are there others out there with the same spec. cheers greg
Great work Greg.

Show us some photos as soon as you get hold of this amazing vehicle!

Cheers,

Scott

Greg, excellent work.I have a 89 Trakka also.It doesnt have the options that you have.Sounds like a very unique rig.At the time of release these cars could built to order.Buyers could really custom build their vehicles for their needs, with just about all the options under the sun.Have you seen some of the Volkswagen promo videos?

Greg,

I have seen a red trakka 2wd van of similar specs with the full trakka body kit but never a syncro.

You have a very unique vehicle there.

Well done, Greg. Sounds like you've bought a beauty. Bring it over to the east coast to show us some time!

I agree with Francesca.

Sounds like it needs a few kilometres put on it - that mileage is way too low for a 20 year old bus.

Great work Greg. Well done and it seems you have a great vehicle. I had a 1989 T3 Trakka before I moved up to a Syncro. As a new owner myself I can understand the trade off between all the extras and what may be useful off road. Mine has a few features that are really off road stuff. There are acrylic panels that fit over the fridge vents and the spark plug leads are sealed in plastic tubes and electrical tape. Also have a few stone guards underneath.

Can you post some photos in due course.

Cheers, Peter (Port Macquarie)

Greg,

This sounds like a Caravelle Syncro based Trakka Gold Pak, then plus some.  It was obviously prepped for show, so you will have the best of the best.  There is a brochure for the standard Gold Pak in Files or Photos.  I am curious about the side skirts; I haven’t heard of that as a Trakka option.

When you take possession, we would certainly like to see a good set of pictures.

Side skirts are possibly same as on Tristar , I wonder what seats were used, the Trakka ones or VAG??  The Vdub ones having far superior armrests which get used whilst the Takkas are more for decoration.

Anyway, Greg, if you read this.....you can rest assured there  are heaps of Syncro drivers here on the eastern border who are GREEN with envy (me included). Hartmut

I appreciate your comments on this everyone. I cant afford it but I didnt think I would see one like this again. I will post some pics when I take posession. In the paperwork kit for the vehicle I noticed an original brochure on the gold pack and accessory checklist. I am not sure what the seats are but wont be surprised if they are not leather stratos seats. greg

Greg and Hart,

If the syncro trakka is the same as the 2wd version I saw - the side skirts are Trakka made fibreglass items that in my opinion look really good. However driving along a rocky trail and you might leave a few bits in the wilderness. Same if you bog down in deep sand or mud ruts.

Otherwise they make a syncro look sporty!

They are a copy of the Caravelle Carat ones. I think they got into trouble for it.
I can picture myself leaving a few bits in the wilderness.
This is one of features I can see that are absoluelty useless for an off road vehicle.

I will have to learn to take them off before my trips. If they are the same as the ones in the Bentley Manual they just clip on and off.

we will see....

Greg,

From looking at the one I saw on a hoist - I think they are screwed on in a few places as well. The one I saw had some fibreglass damage and maybe he screwed bits on to stop them falling off?

They probably add to the fuel bill as well.

I can picture myself leaving a few bits in the wilderness.
This is one of features I can see that are absoluelty useless for an off road vehicle.

I will have to learn to take them off before my trips. If they are the same as the ones in the Bentley Manual they just clip on and off.

we will see....

In the paperwork kit for the vehicle I noticed an original brochure on the gold pack and accessory checklist. I am not sure what the seats are but wont be surprised if they are not leather stratos seats. greg

For those interested, I gather this is what a Syncro looks like in a 'sporty' set of skirts.

Greg,
From looking at the one I saw on a hoist - I think they are screwed on in a few places as well. The one I saw had some fibreglass damage and maybe he screwed bits on to stop them falling off?
They probably add to the fuel bill as well.

Those are nothing more than GL model side panels. Pretty standard for
non-Syncros in the US late '87-'91. Syncros came w/ the side pieces
but have the door cladding.

They have a habit if falling off when you lean on them.
