For those interested, I gather this is what a Syncro looks like in a 'sporty' set of skirts.

I will have to learn to take them off before my trips. If they are the same as the ones in the Bentley Manual they just clip on and off.

Hi Les. Have been too busy and am in Hobart all this week. The old one is off and in my garage. Will fit the new one next week out at Harts place. Will get pics and post them. Next job is to sell the old one. Hope I do not get any rude posts about what it could be used for!!!!

Great tip. Thanks Phil.
Peter
I'm mildly annoyed that you got it. I tried to find the owners when I saw it it storage 2 years ago, but it wasn't meant to be.
But hey, with something that pristine you would hesitate a bit before
taking it down that narrow overgrown track to the beach .
All the best,
Mark

Your bus is a baby, look after it and it will go on for a while long yet.Last week I looked at a T3 that had 550k on the clock.I am sure other group members have alot more kays than I do and probably still havent opened up their transaxle or engine.

Hi Greg,
Firstly, congratulations on your new acquisition, you do have every reason to be proud of it as we all know that we do have UNIQUE vehicles here.Never mind how much you paid for it as believe me it really is worth it as they are Priceless.Look at the prices in the US for ones with low mileage or for ones that have been re-furbished.That will tell you whether you have got a bargain or paid too much.
In relation to the Engine/Gearbox and how long they will go on without any issues.Well my vehicle has just turned 170,000 kms and believe me she does not miss a beat. The original owner from whom i got it in May 2008 had it serviced by the same garage for the 17 years that he owned it and when i checked with them too .they said they could not find any fault with it.They only replaced the working items such as fan Belts,Rotor,Dist Cap,Plugs,re-pack wheel bearings and general maintainence items every year.I have added 10,000 kms since i bought the vehicle and it just turned 170 K.In reading all the info that i have seen so far on it,i believe that the issues with Head Studs Corroding were due to incorrect coolant being used in the first batch of vehicles in the mid 80's and then VW coming out with 2 different types of Coolant as a result of the big adverse publicity that followed in the US in particular.I am of the impression that if the vehicle is
serviced as per the VW recommendations and particular attention is paid to the Coolant that is replenished/Topped up then i can't see why these engines cannot give far more than what you refer to as not seeing any vehicle that has done more than 170 k without issues. Then again if the motor is to pack up prior to that,i guess 4-5 K for a fully rebuilt motor is not too much to ask if the job is done correctly. It is a pity we are not in the US as they advertise fully re-coed motors with new heads too for US2350.
Finally mate,be happy with what you have got yourself as i too looked long and hard for the right vehicle and even though i probably paid too much at the time i believe ,especially after seeing the US prices advertised that i too like you, have scored a UNIQUE Vehicle.
Don't worry about what might happen etc, just go out and enjoy what you have now.
Cheers,
Everard

Greg, mine has just clicked 180,000kms. The engine has factory spec compression, blows no smoke, uses no oil and has no leaks. As far as I can tell it has not even had a rocker cover off. I did the water pump and alternator regulator as a precaution and replaced the worn alternator bearings. Alot of people bag the wbx for head gaskets and corrosion but I think if you do right by it it will last. The best advise I can give you is make sure you have a coolant flush (use g11 or g12) and change your oil regularly. I change my oil every 5,000kms and do an oil and filter every 10,000kms. Also when I first buy a car I change the oil every 1-2,000kms untill the engine cleans up inside. Same goes for the gearbox, change the oil regularly. Although we all know the boxes have weaknesses, one that has not been thrashed and had good oil changes may last alot longer
than we expect. Hope this helps. Greg E--- On Tue, 27/7/10, greg_navarro95 <greg_navarro95@yahoo.com> wrote: |
hope to get a closer look one day. Let me know if you're up in Freo. Regarding life expectancy of the syncro drivetrain and engine, I'm at 285 k on original engine and gearbox. My tips would be check the earth for the motor/gears, replace coolant every 3 years to reduce corrosion risk. Also, replace the water tree with a stainless version.
And a decoupler is well worth the investment for the reduced strain on the drivetrain.
Get out there !

I am heartened that I can keep this vehicle original and in tack mechanically for longer than I thought possible.
I will take your offer up Mark when I get to Freo in the near future.
In the mean time I have to find a new home for the old Trakka which I am working on.

> > In relation to the Engine/Gearbox and how long they will go on without any issues.Well my vehicle has just turned 170,000 kms and believe me she does not miss a beat. The original owner from whom i got it in May 2008 had it serviced by the same garage for the 17 years that he owned it and when i checked with them too .they said they could not find any fault with it.They only replaced the working items such as fan Belts,Rotor,Dist Cap,Plugs,re-pack wheel bearings and general maintainence items every year.I have added 10,000 kms since i bought the vehicle and it just turned 170 K.In reading all the info that i have seen so far on it,i believe that the issues with Head Studs Corroding were due to incorrect coolant being used in the first batch of vehicles in the mid 80's and then VW coming out with 2 different types of Coolant as a result of the big adverse publicity that followed in the US in particular.I am of the impression that if the vehicle is serviced
> > as per the VW recommendations and particular attention is paid to the Coolant that is replenished/Topped up then i can't see why these engines cannot give far more than what you refer to as not seeing any vehicle that has done more than 170 k without issues. Then again if the motor is to pack up prior to that,i guess 4-5 K for a fully rebuilt motor is not too much to ask if the job is done correctly. It is a pity we are not in the US as they advertise fully re-coed motors with new heads too for US2350.

This vehicle has been serviced regularly and never driven hard and rarely offroad by the look of it. Is anyone among you still on the orginal motor and gearbox in their syncro? All comments gratefully recieved. Greg

The vehicle was purchased originaly by a couple from H Kong and used rarely when they were in WA on holidays. She was the show car for Trakka so has a lot of features you would not normally find (I may be corrected on this) ie. leather seats, armrests, cruise control, electric windows, central locking, electric arial, diff lock, sunvisor, stone sheild on windscreen, car bra, sunroof in pop top, side skirts (body kit). A lot of this stuff is going to be bloody useless off road but I will deal with that as the need arises.

Les. Here are some shots of the bull bar on the ground and installed. Also a shot from Valla. We all had a great time there. I will be posting some photos on the Yahoo site.
Cheers, Peter
Peter,
Thanks for the pics. The front bar is identical to the Trakka except for the ends. The Trakka had solid aluminium all the way and the ends reach back as far as the original plastic caps.
I have just heard via Mark Kofahl that there were 13 Syncros at Valla – a very good attendance.

Cheers, Peter,_.___
.
And this is how it would look with spotlights (easy to mount) and the ends that Les talks about. The large VW badge covers a fitting which allows a spare wheel to be mounted although having used it I would prefer the plate to be on the bar below as the tyre obscures vision when mounted. Perhaps the orginal owner was worried about blocking radiator intakes. They also had to put on the additional indicator lights similar to the Tralkka ones.
Look forward to the other Valla pictures.
Cheers
Roger

Hi Hec, don’t know if Pete’ has weight his new bar, however I have and it’s the same model made by the same manufacturer. It is 17 kg or 37.78 pounds.
Have a great day ! Hartmut

Thanks Hart. I did not weigh it but 17kg sounds about right. I am very pleased and it makes the Syncro look heaps better.
