Do you understand what I am getting at?

I had a look on their website but just saw the replacement canvas, not the roof. Sent them an email asking about the pop tops but no reply yet.

I didn't say that. I said legal as in complying specifications.

Trakka pop tops are no longer legal without reinforcing.

Some engineers pass them and others don't.

Engineering inspection, assessment and approval is required for all structural modifications to a vehicle in order to obtain registration.

Separately, inspection and approval is required to ensure that the vehicle complies with ADRs.

No insurance company will touch a vehicle that is no so approved.  In the event that a vehicle is insured but has modifications not known to the insurance company, they have no legal obligation to pay out in the event of a crash – any crash, related or not.

Unfortunately, Australia labours under an unbelievably costly dinosaur called “States”.  Every State operates on the Divine Right principle, which was passably understandable 150 years ago but legally entitles each state to enact its own legislation and that’s exactly what happens in the area of vehicle modifications.  In general, it conflicts with every other State but – hey! – that’s our Divine Right!!

The end result is that each state has its own version of engineering requirements.  Something legally acceptable in Victoria probably won’t be in at least two other states and vice versa.  Mercifully, ADRs are Federal and the states have no say in them but, be assured, if they did we would have six completely different and conflicting sets of regulations!!

The cost of this nonsense is incalculable but – hey! – that’s out Divine Right!!

I couldn't have said it any better myself Les.

I can buy a brand new Chery in NSW. Can I buy one in Victoria? No, they are not allowed to be registered there.

I can put a driving light on my car in NSW. I can't do that in Queensland as I have to buy 2.

I have heard of a lot of owners having to put CRAB bars in their T3 because of dodgy engineers not knowing what they are doing. The same with Golfs.

hi, have been reading this very closely!

how do the trakka roof reinforcements look like? do you have to refit them?

if i have a trakka roof and refit it to another van, in the same way like it was fitted to the previous one and take it to the engineer whit the former engineers certificate could there be the chance tat its not approved? assuming he knows his stuff!

i wasn't aware of a difference in the T3 shape or form not even structural, to those driving around anywhere else in the world. (not SA, thats different)

not to stur up anything just out of curiosity,

i am awaiting my sycro Multivan to be delivered in May including its Westi roof and so on. hope i can get it registered..... listening to you guys i have to get 20k $ instead and by something else locally

I don't think that there is any.

Just take it to another one.

assuming he knows his stuff!

There's the problem.

The Westfalia uses a different body to a normal van and has built in reinforcing. I don't know about a T3, but on the T2 the floor also had reinforcing.

Are you importing from SA?
What state are you in?

Email sent using Optus Webmail

Jens,

This is deeply into can-of-worms territory!  For the reasons that I outlined before, it will depend entirely on what state you are in.

Broadly speaking, any pop top that is sold in Australia has to be approved by the registration authority of each individual state.  Sometimes, sanity prevails and the approval of the state in which the modification was produced will be accepted by the other states.  In other cases, the Divine Right takes precedence and other states will require individual approval.

(If this sounds nonsensical, it is; it is governed by the fact that, whilst ADR acceptance is a Federal function, each state has its own vehicle registration function.  This is what they use to accept or reject any aspect of motor vehicles.  Whim plays a big part!!  Even interpretations of Federal requirement can vary wildly from state to state!)

The Trakka conversions were relatively unique in Australia in that they could be ordered off the VW dealer’s showroom floor.  A customer could order any level of Trakka conversion on a new vehicle and it was covered under the VW new vehicle warranty.  (Mine was one such vehicle.)

Getting back to your queries, everything will depend on which state you live in.

Les

I am importing from Namibia, but the van is an import from Germany. It's going around the world, have to change the steering though. I have all parts for the conversion in another van.

I am in Sydney and thought that it would be worth it ,looking at the prices charged for one of these.

If you are a permanent resident and have owned the vehicle for more than 12 months there will be no problems. You will probably just need child restraints and headlights for RHD. Maybe seat belts for the rear.

The headlights are sorted, child restraints and the 3 point seat-belts for the 3 seater bench at the rear need to be installed but are available including brackets and so on.
Child restraints are a pussle to me because there are so many different opinions and ways on the i-net, that I thought, I first have a look at the points in the scrap van to be placed in mine. (Engineer permitting of cause)
