Prestige AC system

A pic is worth a thousand words. Can you post one? I'm not anywhere any of my T3's. Otherwise, I'd have a better idea what you are referring to.

Greg,

Yes I've just refitted the said AC bracket ... it's one of my favourite things to do.   HA!

Wire brush and lube the bolt threads in question beforehand, if possible, pre clean and lube the thread in the boss as well. I know, it's difficult.

Get up INTO the engine bay, straddle the engine, head toward drivers side. Now this will take some dexterity, but put your left hand under the frontside air intake pipes and right hand under the rearside air intake pipes. Flying blind, manipulate the bolt into position and get the bolt started on the thread. Handscrew the bolt in as far as possible. Then select various spanners to suit the available space between the frontside air intake pipe and the firewall. Figure out how to tighten it the best you can, adapting whatever tools you have. The other three bolts can be simply tightened using a 17mm socket and extension wrench. Fun times!

Cheers.

Ken

Hi Les and other Prestige A/C people. I am up to fitting the original VW A/C bracket at the moment and having difficulty fixing the rear RH mounting bolt because the pipe that leads into the intake air distriutor is just over the top of the bolt hole.

Have others had this issue and is the only fix to remove the pipe altogether? Greg

Ken, I think when gassing r134a the bubbles stop in the sight glass and then it will need more gas, unlike r12. Your man would I assume be using the sight glass as a reference and looking at his pressures. It is possible to work out the system capacity by having the specs of all the components and measing the pipe diameter and length. No one will ever actually sit down and do it though. The tx valve injects the gas in to the evaporator, if it were broken it would show on the pressure gauges. Greg E

Thanks Ken, The bolt for the bracket has a round head and allen key thingy in the head. It is actually too long to fit under the pipe in question and wants to go in on an angle. The VW bracket requires that it couldnt be much shorter or it wouldnt have any thread after it goes through the bracket. I take it the bolt you have used is a standard hex head bolt. So your method doesnt look like it will fit for me or am I looking at this wrong. Greg

Greg,
Those wanting to better understand automobile AC system theory, the attached pdf file might help. Or else, maybe a little bit of knowledge might be dangerous!
Cheers.

Ken, Greg, I wrote yesterday about this, but my computer didn’t feel like transmitting it for me so here we go ...a bright new day.

The bracket I sourced from BenT , I had it bead blasted and the steel bits I cleaned and painted them with POR 15.  I tried to install the thing but gave up on that forward bolt. Decided to take out the air intake arrangement  and thoroughly cleaned everything. The threads M10  I  think they are, I cleaned by running a tap through them, after installing the bracket I reinstalled the air intake and used the original squeeze clamps , as they were taken off with care.     Hope this helps.  Hartmut

Thanks Hartmut

Can you explain the sequence for removing the "air intake arrangement"?
How much has to come off?

Does it involve the injection area or can this be left insitu.

If I damage the clip when removing can this be replaced by a screw type hose clamp?

Regards Greg

From memory Greg,

·         Disconnect battery (always good practice)

·         Check the 2 hoses between manifold and intake tubes for cracks. Get new ones first if required .

·         Undo the 2 clamps , screw types are ok for installation

·         Disconnect 2 yellow plugs on injectors

·         Disconnect 2 fuel supply hoses

·         Undo 2 M8 bolts holding arrangement to cyl head

·         Take out assembly

You might have to replace the gasket between cylinder head and intake assembly.

Good luck , hope this helps

H.

Thanks Hartmut

Can you explain the sequence for removing the "air intake arrangement"?
How much has to come off?

Does it involve the injection area or can this be left insitu.

If I damage the clip when removing can this be replaced by a screw type hose clamp?

Regards Greg

It comes down to the system, especially the evaporator, being too small for the cabin size. If you don't have kids put an air curtain in and the system will cope fine. If you have a tin top go overhead a/c, the evaporator is much bigger and the cold air will rain down on your head. If you have kids and a pop top your pushing sh#$ up hill. I will try splicing another evaporator into the system at some stage (mounted under rear seat). Will it work - dunno. Greg E

Also westys are essentially sunroof roof paneled which means they still have the rear half of the roof intact to bolt an evaporator under. All Aussie conversions I have seen cut back to about 200mm from the hatch. Greg E

When I bought my Syncro the previous owner threw in a Prestige system that he bought from Beetle Spares. They had removed it from a 2WD caravelle. He never got around to fitting it, and neither have I.

As well as the standard condensor that fits under the dashboard, it has another huge condensor that fits neatly under the floor between the chassis rails on the driver's side, with the plumbing and outlet which appears to fit under the rear passenger seat.

It includes a large electric fan, separate controls for the rear, and all the plumbing and bracketry.

It fits neatly under the floor without reducing ground clearance.

The rest of the system, including the compressor, is standard Prestige.

It looks like it should work well, because of the massive condensor, but I never installed it. I rarely carry passengers in the back.

It's up for grabs if anyone wants it, for a reasonable price, to get it out of the shed.

As for enlarging the dashboard outlets, I would give that some serious thought.

If it was that easy, it would have been done by the manufacturer.

Range Rover vents, for example, are smaller near the condensor [passenger's side] and get larger toward the extremities. This is to force cool air across the whole width of the dashboard. Otherwise the passenger get's all the benefit, and the driver none.

                                                                                     Roger [Beetle].

With the Prestige system I found it to be a great improvement to remove that foam screen from the evaporator (that being the the heat exchanger on top of the dash) . I did not know what that foam
blocking the airflow, was for, but BenT had the answer. He told me it has been installed to prevent  snow from coming out. Now who would object to that ???? Anyway, the system in my Trakka works
almost perfectly, no complains here. Btw, I still had some R12 refrigerant which I am using in the system. I also replaced that Prestige contraption of a bracket holding the compressor (7kg) and replaced it with an original one, also from BenT $ 100.-- , worth every dime.

Hi Hartmut,

Sounds interesting ... worth checking out.

What needs to be removed to get a look at the foam screen?

Cheers.
