Hi Dave,

Yes, I had the front set installed. The first lot sagged after a few months, I got a new set installed free of charge about 14 months ago,                             
the rear spring just got a spacer.
So far so good. I'm happy with the performance.

I too have the front springs from Volksland with OME shocks on my Takka.

I am very happy with the ride and the vehicle height

Thanks for the info; your report on the front springs is encouraging.  I am going on a four month trip to the Kimberley region returning via the Tanami desert road to Alice Springs and then Alice to Laverton and back to Perth .  We leave in late April and I want to fit some new springs before we go.

 

I am keen to meet other Syncro owners in WA and perhaps do a Syncro group trip some time in the future.  I have joined the VW Club of WA but they do not have many Syncro owners as members.  Any WA Syncro owners interested in forming a local group for trips in WA?

I'm keen for some trips out around Perth, I live in Duncraig, actually out to-nite for some beach driving and a sleep out under the stars/back of the van.

It seems hard to get everyone together, everyones so busy. Winter is best for me. I like to make a call the day before and see who's intrested, if nobodies intrested we go ourselves. I like to get out once a month, no point having a syncro if it doesn't get muddy (more likely sandy around here)

Note with interest your trip starting late April.
My wife and I are planning a similar Syncro trip but from Sydney starting mid June or July.
Itinerary being Alice, Tanami, Kununurra,Mitchel falls,Broome,Perth, home.
Opposite way to you so hopefully our paths will cross around Halls creek.
Like you, early preparation. OME shockers on order but what springs are you using?
Suplex springs from J Kampers are the easiest to access (made in germany). Any other suggestions?
Shwenka from USA is an option or H.R from Go Westy. Can any one help on this one?
Tried googling Volksland as recently mentioned as a possible source, no luck, address anybody?

Hey Graham,

I'm going to see Steve Schwenk in San Francisco in about 5 days, just in case you have any questions you want me to pass along. I have a pair of his early Syncro.org springs. They are stiffer than stock but do not appear to be designed to raise the vehicle more than about 12-13mm. He does have newer versions which were in the testing phase last time I heard.

I had a set of the H&R springs sold by GoWesty in Los Osos, California. They are designed to primarily raise the vehicle in my opinion. They are incredibly stiff and unsuitable for what I originally procured them for. My Syncro ute tipped the scales at a mere 3310 lbs. Whereas the H&R's appear to have been designed for a fully laden Syncro Westy which comes in about 5600 lbs. They incredibly difficult to install without a bunch of fat guys standing on the edge of the front bumper, even with a spring compressor in use. It does give a "mighty loud and proud" stance to the vehicle.

There are other options besides those available in the US. A company called Small Car in Tacoma, Washington (USA) sells a spring similar to the Syncro.org springs. I do not experience with their product though. IIRC, Van Cafe in Santa Cruz, California sell Weitec springs. No experience with them but love the lime green powder coating.

If you have a larger budget, you can buy a coilover shock system. Then you can have a choice of spring rates and shock valving. But that is another story altogether.

I have just finished putting xd falcon springs on the front ( 1mm larger in the spring dia, and 1cm longer than falcon standard. And on the rear i have put Nissan gq patrol front springs on the rear( these were after market hd spring sourced from wrecker.

All up a very cheap way of re springing a heavier than standard camper syncro.

Brian,I am also interested in the Falcon spring option.
Were these springs made by a spring manufacturer to those specs?
How have you found them?Do you also run OME shocks?
Has it raised the front at all?how much?

The falcon springs come i 1cm length increments( don’t know the max length you can get them, and also spring dia increments. My local car accessory shop sourced them, but they were off the shelf items. The wind is app 2mm larger dia in the wind but they still sit in the shock holder ( new standard boags) ok. Oh i had to grind one end to have a flat profile.

The ride of the van before these changes( with a camper fitout and much more weight 70lit more fuel and70lit of water etc) the suspension arms were already over the center line of their travel, ie when hitting a bump they were already mostly through the better half of their travel.but now the arm is in a position where it still has the best part of its travel at the beginning of the bump. Side advantage is far more ground clearance, but still it is nut stressing the uni’s.

The Nissan rears now make the van sit flat from the side view, and are much more compliant over bumps, once again the swing arm is in a better attitude to hit a bump. Because i got these from a wrecker and i know they are heavy duty but i don’t exactly know how hd they are.

From memory front springs $80 ea and rears $20ea and a happier ride and stance have made a syncro owner happy.

Oh and one more thing you need toknow about the rears is that the diminished spring wind dia is not as much as the syncro spring but it is ok in my estimation. They have been on for a few thousand k now with no probs. They passed a rego hoist inspection.

Were these springs made by a spring manufacturer to those specs?
How have you found them?Do you also run OME shocks?
Has it raised the front at all?how much?

Hi Brian and Ben. Yesterday i also did a suspension lift. Fitted a second hand pair of 2wd springs to the front and 24mm of spacers on top of the spring on the rear.The rear spacers cut from nylon sheet (2x12mm) from the scrap bin at the Plastics factory in coffs harbour ($20). The front now rides at 480mm from centre hub to guard (previously 460) a lift of 20mm. The rear now ride at 490mm (previously 465mm) a lift of 25mm. A 25mm lift dosn't sound much but it definitely gives the van a prouder stance and the extra clearance will be handy. The drive is still very stable,possibly a little softer at the front(or maybe my imagination). Anything less than 500mm hub to guard i think will have little impact on the cv's. Heading of to qld in a couple a days for a tour so will report back. Like Brians you don't have to spend a fortune to lift em a bit. Bill.

Also we should all make a note of Brians ford/nissan spring specs when on outback travel. They would be fairly readily available in the bush in case of broken spring. Bill

Hi Bill,
Its not your imagination the 2wd springs are softer. I found it necessary to wash off a lot of speed before attacking off road obstacles with them. The ride on the freeway is great though. Enjoy your holiday, how far north are you heading? Greg E

Hi Greg. Sunshine coast hinterland and maybe up to Bundy for a couple a days. Going inland way to bypass Surfers, Brissy and Noosa. Just drifting really with a few stopovers with friends. Bill
