Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Australia Trip [2 Attachments]

Seems we all have the same problem, want to go from A to B in fastest possible time.
Should I ever find the need for a different engine my choices would be : Golf 2 ltr TDI, Golf VR 6,
or , after having won the lotto, Audi V6 Diesel. All would need gearbox work.
All are VW in house brands...

Tony, don't know , you would have to ask them. A Syncro friend is doing
It right now, he is using the 2 ltr engine, not the 1.9. It will be one of the first 2ltr
Conversions. The electronics are quite a bit more complex but he was lucky and has it all worked out.
He bought a 2010 Golf, side damage, driveable, under 100.000 ks
on auction , very. reasonable.

How is he working around CANBUS and is engine lid modification required? Can you point us to a build thread anywhere Hart?

Rowan, don't really know what canbus stands for ....if it has to do with legality or along those lines, I think he couldn't care. His van was a British private import and he had a Mazda diesel installed for some years. Finally he broke the crank.
The engine lid he had raised like the SA models with Audi engine. Will possibly the same with the TDI.
He is a Swiss Electronic Engineer who lives on the coast but rebuilds the Syncro on his hobby farm(1500ac) 3000ft up in the clouds. Very difficult access, surrounded by National Park.
A must experience. When he is further down the track I will contact you if you like and you/we
could spend a w/e there. It's in the backdrop of Kempsey .
I believe that there are existing built  threads on SA sites or US. Haven't seen them though as
I'm happy with what I have got ( stock standard )

Hi Hart,

Can-bus refers to the new fangled computer systems that run modern vehicle systems.
The Subaru Boxer Diesel for example needs an aftermarket ecu controller to work around CANBUS.
Adds to the overall cost of such conversions.  I drove a Subi 2.5 in a 2WD the other day.  Still happy with my stock set up.  I like to know what creative tinkerers are up to though!  Next time I'm in the area Hart I would like to make the time to see this!

FYI

Quattrosyncro now up and running.
Yes - A4 Engine running backwards with complete quattro drivetrain in a Syncro!
Wait a while and those enterprising yanks will probably have a conversion kit available
to turn your syncro into a barnstorming quattro rally van!

Hartmut,

All I want is a reliable engine, so when I put my foot down it does what it’s supposed to do and not

think about it for a second or two. And why is that - because certain parts are N/A.

In regards to – fastest possible time – I’m still being constantly overtaken by other drivers,

while we are plodding along at our leisure.

Cheers,

Theo & Christine

Seems we all have the same problem, want to go from A to B in fastest possible time.
Should I ever find the need for a different engine my choices would be : Golf 2 ltr TDI, Golf VR 6,
or , after having won the lotto, Audi V6 Diesel. All would need gearbox work.
All are VW in house brands...

This is why I've gone down the route of the Volvo B23 conversion... Bullet proof engine and parts everywhere

Theo ,sorry if I upset you, my post was actually in reply to manx ( don't know his given name as he doesn't sign out with one).
But now you mention something you didn't before.... The engine is holding back... not what you expect when you need the power. Hope that Greg E. Can come up with some possible causes.
But what you could do, is checking the idle / full power enrichment switch. I had that problem recently and my truck is a totally different vehicle since replacing the switch with a second hand one.
I have ordered one I want as replacement (go Westy) , it should be available here shortly and you can have it to test or take it over from me and I order another one or send it back to me.
Mine worked intermittently and therefore the fault wasn't easily found.
If you don't know where it is located I can send you a diagram ( if I can work it out how )

Safe travels, Hartmut

Hi Theo,

Jealous of your trip. Sounds good. We are Sydney based now so if you need a place to charge the batteries and fill the water tanks, let us know.

With regards to being overtaken, I have a theory that it doesn't matter how fast you go in these vans, other drivers are desperate to pass you regardless. Something to do with being behind a 25+ year old brick and they deserve to be in front of you. Also similar when you ride a push bike.

Safe travels.

Jon.

The Subi 2.5 is a good option from my limited time in one so far.

Just done a 1500 km trip fully loaded .
110kmh average head wind @ 13.5 l / 100km.
95kph fully loaded slight tail wing no aircon @11.5 l / 100km.
Holds 85kph in 4th up steep inclines  aircon on.
That's with 130 l fuel, 90 l water, 2 spares etc.

Good torque curve , about 3400rpm at 100 kmh using 235/15/75 tires.

Plus a million Subi's at the wreckers all over Australia.

Let me do another 50000km before I get too carried away.

Mark
Mark,

I think you have summed up the 2.5 Scooby motor very well - economical and powerful and most importantly - you can get essential parts anywhere and very cheaply as they are so common.

Great to see you are enjoying your "new" syncro.

Cheers,

Skot

I've heard alot about the subies cruising ability but how does it go rock crawling or idling over obstacles?Eddie.
Interesting topic. How does the drive train cope with all the extra power? Are the gearboxes strong enough or should extra rebuilds be factored in? We are not talking about a slight increase in power over stock.

Jon.
