Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Australia Trip [2 Attachments]

Mine climbs well over rocks with my 2.7 - 6 cyl scooby donk but I am on my second gearbox rebuild.

Cheers,

Interesting topic. How does the drive train cope with all the extra power? Are the gearboxes strong enough or should extra rebuilds be factored in? We are not talking about a slight increase in power over stock.

95kph fully loaded slight tail wing no aircon @11.5 l / 100km.
Holds 85kph in 4th up steep inclines aircon on.
That's with 130 l fuel, 90 l water, 2 spares etc.

Good torque curve , about 3400rpm at 100 kmh using 235/15/75 tires.

Plus a million Subi's at the wreckers all over Australia.

Let me do another 50000km before I get too carried away.

Hey Mark good to hear the first trip went well.
Did your conversion kit have a replacement bell housing so you can run the Subaru clutch and did you go for the bigger turbo clutch and pressure plate ?
Some old kits only use an adapter plate so you are only able to run the std. vw clutch pressure plate set up.
I see the subi hi and low range gearbox is being set up for the first time in the us in a syncro and should be up and running this week.
I cant wait for the flick shift auto to be available
Cheers Pete

Eddie the crawling is better now that you can use a bellhousing and Subi flywheel. More stable and unstoppable than original. As to power well that's mostly a matter of how you drive I think.
Sudden application of power not recommended. Mostly I find myself revving out a bit more through the gears
but that's about it. I don't imagine it will do gear damage in the long term. I know of one conversion 8 years old now with no drivetrain issues.

I have had a few Delica owners drooling over the Syncro, and lamenting some very, very expensive problems with their vans. Some of the old L300 4x4's look pretty cool though...

Between my bay kombi and my syncro I had an 85 L300 4wd van - it was lifted and beastly with lots of fluff but its engine was gutless and it struggled in deep sand on my Fraser Island trip.

I just had a 2.6 sigma engine fitted and it was stolen - might have been a good van with that extra power but I will never know.

It had very limited internal room though. It was narrow and had terrible head clearance and had a high centre of gravity and hence wanted to roll a lot.

I only bought it because I couldn't afford a syncro at the time.

One of my clients had a delica until someone rearranged his front end a year ago. Poor ground clearance, NO acceleration and broken plastic bits everywhere.

The problem I have with front engine vans is the fore/aft roll centre.
All that weight up front and high.

Years ago when I did my first 4WD driver training course, Chris Mullet, the motoring journalist,
and the owner of the business, was worried about the Syncro until he saw it perform.
On a previous course he had had the experience of a front engine 4WD almost rolling end for end down a steep descent.

The Syncro has a 50/50 natural weight distribution and because the engine is flat, it contributes to a low centre of gravity.

When Michael Newton, the Porsche mechanic who installed the 3.6 in the back of my 1982 2WD Caravelle,
he asked me how much ground clearance I wanted and I said minimal.
We got a CofG for the engine and gear box almost lined up with the centre of the rear wheels, nice and low.

I didn't want to break any rules mentioning another vehicle. All I was trying to say is if you are going to the effort to replace major components like engines and gear boxes grafted in from more modern vehicles, why not just buy a more modern vehicle?

Buy a ~25year old vehicle and expect it to need a lot of TLC and find parts hard to get.

In reference to the Delica, as with any vehicle look around and you can find people that have nothing but troubles, and people that have had excellent experiences, the Syncro is no exception to this. I have a few friends that have/have had the later L400 (series 2) Delica, all have done plenty of km in them, and lots of off road km. They have loads of power and are very comfortable off road.. None have had issues running/maintaining them.

Hartmut,

I also have a new enrichment switch from (Van-Cafe).

Now that you mentioned it, I better check it with my multimeter.

However my problem seems to be the idle stabiliser.

With all my fiddling around I ended up with different components

in the Digifant setup. Oh the joy of owning a Syncro.

Cheers,

Theo

Theo ,sorry if I upset you, my post was actually in reply to manx ( don't know his given name as he doesn't sign out with one).

But now you mention something you didn't before.... The engine is holding back... not what you expect when you need the power. Hope that Greg E. Can come up with some possible causes.

But what you could do, is checking the idle / full power enrichment switch. I had that problem recently and my truck is a totally different vehicle since replacing the switch with a second hand one.

I have ordered one I want as replacement (go Westy) , it should be available here shortly and you can have it to test or take it over from me and I order another one or send it back to me.

Mine worked intermittently and therefore the fault wasn't easily found.

If you don't know where it is located I can send you a diagram ( if I can work it out how )

Safe travels, Hartmut

Seems we all have the same problem, want to go from A to B in fastest possible time.
Should I ever find the need for a different engine my choices would be : Golf 2 ltr TDI, Golf VR 6,
or , after having won the lotto, Audi V6 Diesel. All would need gearbox work.
All are VW in house brands...

Comparing the two vehicles can be illustrated by what happened in South Africa when the T4 Syncro was introduced.  A lot of T3 Syncro owners thought that it would be a significant improvement and bought them.

It wasn’t long before they realized that there is a very serious difference in vehicle dynamics between a rear engine and predominantly rear wheel drive and a front engine and predominantly front wheel drive.

The SA Syncro group carried posts from those who had bought T4’s and took them to the same places that they had taken their T3’s for years.  The most charitable view was that they were about 50-60% as capable as the bog standard T3; some put it a LOT lower!

VAG soon got the message and started introducing options to try to get better off road characteristics but they made little difference.  This is down to the fact that the front engine configuration has quite different dynamics to the rear engine and can’t be changed by later options.

The T3 Syncro is a rock solid and very capable off road vehicle.  Later Subaru engines, judiciously used, will certainly improve them but at a significant financial cost.  For an average user who doesn’t need to go climbing up moraines every second weekend, the MV engine does an adequate job.

I have had a few Delica owners drooling over the Syncro, and lamenting some very, very expensive problems with their vans. Some of the old L300 4x4's look pretty cool though...

Why not buy a Delica?.Lot less work, lot more capability.

Hi Theo, please say Hello to Les from me, I will see him / them soon too. Theo, I had had idling problems for many months, I have changed parts from fuel pump to idling stabiliser unit, changed the electronics behind the tail light....all to no avail. When checking...finally.. The micro switch, it looked ok as it is hard to keep a good contact with the meter probes to the switch contacts. I made a gadget from an old plug to get a reliable reading, and BINGO it showed the switch being faulty although it makes the right click noise!
Since replacing the switch the engine went through a transformation , it never has been better.

It now starts easily and idles straightway at 800 rpm, hot or cold, no difference. These are my experiences and I am not saying that it will fix your problem but seeing that you carry a spare ,
maybe try it. If you think the stabiliser unit is faulty , try the one from Les' bus , too easy takes 5 minutes, just make sure to reconnect the hoses correctly, which. I didn't do and had no idling at all.....
Good luck.

Hartmut,

Seems we all have the same problem, want to go from A to B in fastest possible time.
Should I ever find the need for a different engine my choices would be : Golf 2 ltr TDI, Golf VR 6,
or , after having won the lotto, Audi V6 Diesel. All would need gearbox work.
All are VW in house brands...

Hi Rich, I read your post in the context you mention in your reply... fixing these beast to me is as much fun as driving them, as the old saying goes, VW makes good mechanics out of ordinary people, every time !

But , ( better to say 'however' ) I don't agree with the find parts bit. I have never had the problem of getting a part, not for the gearbox or engine  or the headlight switch last week , I was offered a brand new German one or a s/h one and at JK you find one for $19.50, wonder who makes those...
Was there any particular item that you could not find ? Please let us know. Ex group member
BenT is an excellent address for hard to find items too, he helped me with an original a / c
compressor bracket and some other stuff...

Jon,

No, because comparisons can be illuminating.  Even comparisons between Volkswagen models can be quite informative.  I posted earlier today about the South African T3 Syncro and T4 Syncro experience as an example.

Les, isn't this sort of email against the forum rules? If not it should be :)

Jon.

Sorry all. An attempt at humour on my part. Good to read about the comparisons.

Thanks Harmut,

Everyone who purchased a Syncro and ended up here have their own reasons for choosing a T3. It's unlikely to be a vehicle you just happened to get like buying a corolla or commodore etc. It's a vehicle you seek out and purchase. Buying a vehicle is an emotional decision more so than a practical one, so it's to be expected people will defend their decision to purchase said vehicle (get onto any model specific forum for any car, expose some weakness, real or perceived, in that vehicle and wait for the fireworks).

For myself it's a progression from a long line of VW's. I came to like the Kombi as cheap reliable transport and after many camping adventures (including a 6 month round Oz trip) it became part of the family (and still is). I've only owned the Syncro a few years, and it took some 12 months before I was driving the Syncro more than the old T2 bus, so it is slowly growing on me.

The Syncro is practical for me, a bus for regular outings with the rellies, a van for trips away with our hoard of kids and something that is happy to get off the beaten track.

All that aside I am realistic enough to know buying the Syncro was an emotional decision and far from a practical one. I have a 25 year old vehicle that is all original so I can expect many parts will need replacing over the next few years, and if I'm lucky I will replace them before they fail.

I know had I purchased a near new 4WD it would be faster, more reliable, more economical and require a lot less work to keep it on the road. Most likely cheaper also if I factor in potential motor/GB rebuilds.

I am not trying to say I'm unhappy with the Syncro, far from it. Just in my opinion, if I was unhappy with the Syncro, be it cost, reliability, power etc, why not get a more modern vehicle and fix all the problems in one go.

Harmut, with regard to the parts, thank you for the offer. No there is not anything specific I am chasing, it's more that you can't drive down the road and buy any part you need from the dealer. Instead we need to rely on specialty shops that try to source suitable parts to keep the Syncro alive, but buyer beware when it comes to where they sourced the parts and how long they take to bring in. All which again pushes up the cost.

Anyway, that's my opinion, happy to others to disagree :)

Richard

This is why I set up this group ten years ago.  There are certainly traps in procuring spares of adequate quality and this group helps address that problem.  Equally important is having technical experience to draw on and the group has proved very valuable to a lot of people.
