Rear Diff Lock cause damage?

See, in terms of "service on the road", i would never want to have
single hex, because a) once they are muddy and dirty you f*ck'em up
VERY easily with no way of loosening on-he-fly, except for giving a
goof XZN and a hammer a try - and b) i don't need replacement since i
don't need to f*ck'em up :) XZN is simply the more robust head in
terms of torque (tool2head) and servicability in dirt and (shorter)
intervals. So to sum it up: Whoever has single hex over here, switches
to XZN the first chance he gets.

Ciao,

Martin

P.S.: We had "originally" XZN in front and single hex in rear. Don't
ask why...

I get it now,
in Aussie speak you guys are talking about the CV joint securing screws, yes ?

I, or we, in the US call the 6-sided ones..............'6 mm allen screws'.

the later ones we or at least, I, call 12 point ones.'  Not an allen , and not a torx.  I call them ' 12 point 'star' types.

For sure, the later 12 point ones are made out of tougher material.
it is very easy to strip out the 6 mm allen screw ones.
Of hundreds of 12 point ones I've removed , I've only ever seen one strip out.
They are deffenitely harder materail.

I have my various tricks for these screws, as does everyone else likely.
some of my tips -
dig out the crude with a small screw driver.
spray penetrating oil in there, to help disolve the crud so it can wash out.
very important - before even attempting to unscrew one, give it a very sharp WHACK with a hammer and good size drift.
or 5 sharp whacks, not 'heavy thuds' .....but very sharp whacks.
If a screw doesn't start to unscrew, and feels like it will strip out where the tool goes into it, give it 10 more sharp whacks.
Sometimes is they won't unscrew, you can try tightenting them a bit first........that can help sometimes.

and there is unscrewing one with a hammer and cold chisel. That works really well.
On the outbaord ones in the trailing arms, if I have to use this mehtod on one of those ........I have a cold chisel about 14 inches long that will reach in there.

what fun these beasts are !

Gday Scott,
You probably have us Aussies intrigued.
What exactly is the plan of attack and process and result for quote:
"and there is unscrewing one with a hammer and cold chisel. That works really well."
Especially the ones in the trailing arms.
Cheers.

Let us find your next place for you! Need a place to rent, buy or share?
And if you ever strip out the socket on the hex (Allen) socket head
bolt, try this. Get a "GOOD" XZN bit (mine's a Hazet), put it on the end
of an old socket extension, and hammer the bit into the socket of the
stripped bolt. You only usually need 3 or 4 mm to get a good grip on the
bolt, and the hammering helps to loosen the thread's grip on the flange.
I've done this a few dozen times, never fails.

Scott,

There is always a problem with the mixed usage of propriety names and descriptive names.  “Allen” and “Torx” are propriety names.  “Allen screw” is in very widespread use around the world and understandably so.  The descriptive is “hexagonal socket head” and is now more common in catalogues than “Allen”.  Using “12 point” socket head as a descriptor makes a lot of sense.

But that is a side issue.  Thanks for pointing out the workshop savvy process of applying sharp impacts to break the intimate bond between the screw and what it is screwed into.  This works extremely well and is common workshop practice.  They key to making this work is, as you say, that the impacts must be sharp impacts.

The hammer and cold chisel process sound a bit alarming!

On Saturday 24 October, the VW Club of Victoria is holding its Geelong Waterfront morning between 9AM and midday.

This is a casual event, just an annual gathering of VWs on the Geelong waterfront.  I will be going down and all Syncro owners are welcome to come along.  I don’t have any details of the precise meeting point but Brian might be able to provide details.

Les

Hi Les,

I’m still away up north, but people should find details on the VWCV website, or if not, Doc, who is organising it, has also posted on the Kombi Club site here; http://forums.kombiclub.com/showthread.php?t=24394  Note, there is also the possibility of a cruise down the GOR  after the display, and return to Torquay for an overnight camp.

I should be back by then, so I’ll see you there, along with some others, I hope.

I spoke to Hart again today, and he reckons there may be as many as 7 vans (not all Syncro’s) coming from NSW for DotVW.

Brian,

Thanks for that.

The directions are:

“north down Yarra Street , turn left at waters edge”

Looking at Melway, this would translate into travel north along Yarra Street to the intersection with Eastern Beach (no, it doesn’t have ‘road’ or ‘street’ attached to the name) and turn left.  Since the “north down Yarra Street” brings you through the heart of the Geelong business/shopping centre, it might be smarter to get off the highway at Mercer, turn left anywhere to get to the waterfront, then drive around from there.

Re the DOTVW, how much space do we have allocated?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your concern. Yes the T5 is fixed (about 1000km under the belt now, starting to feel confident of it again). Been further north, then back to Port McQ. last night, and a day/night at Old Bar again today (didn’t feel like I’d seen much of it during the festival). Tomorrow I’ll catch up with Paul N (from the Cape trip) in Newcastle, then on towards home. Then 2 VWCV weekends (Geelong and Swan Hill) before DotVW. Don’t know how I ever used to fit in full time work.

At least you are enjoying life again - you seemed a tad down at Old Bar and a malfunctioning vehicle is a very good reason to be worried.

Hope the rest of your travels are uneventful.

WE have four weeks to the Day of the Volkswagen in Victoria , this year celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Kombi, at the Cranbourne Racecourse.

So far we have the following confirmed attendees:

·        Mark Kofahl

·        Hartmut Kiehn

·        Francesca Coles

·        Gary Cookson

·        Les Harris

·        Michael Roberts

·        Theo Weiss

We need to know NOW who is coming so that we can plan how to use our allocated space.  The last thing we want is to have members scattered around the place.

We also need to know NOW who wants to overnight at Tooradin so that we can get a booking.

Les

Hi Les and all,

My Syncro is still off the road but I will definately be there hopefully in a 91 Single cab ute (non syncro) which Im presently restoring as my work vehicle. I have never seen one of these at the DOTVW so should be another rarity for the day. Would you mind me lining up with you guys?

Bob,

As a first move, get in touch with Mark Kofahl.  There are a number of NSW members coming down and it would make sense to travel together.  Mark is organizing that at the NSW end.

In the meanwhile, I will check the Tooradin caravan park to see if they have cabins and get back to you.

Les

Hi Les

Can you please include David and Kahrina for staying on Sat night.

They are v good friends of Hart and I met them at Old Bar. They have
just bought their first Kombi (a camper) and will travel down from
Port Macquarie with Hart and then us from Camden.
