Rock and Roll Bed

Hello I have just met a German couple that are about to have a baby and need to fit a seat and bed to their T3 2WD.  Does any one know where they could get a rock and roll bed? The vehicle was a Caravelle originally so had seats fitted.
Can a T2 rock and roll bed fit a T3 legally?  We are all in WA. Any help appreciated.  Regards Greg
I would say refitting the original caravelle bench or a multi van bench would be easiest. I have just gone through the process of making boards, cutting foam, trimming them blahh blahh. Much easier to buy a vw bench of gumtree. The big issue is wether the van is young enough to have the floor mounted child restraints.

Try Jamie from Custom Kombi.

http://www.kustomkombi.com/category-s/1827.htm

He has the only ADR approved T2 rock n roll bed seat available in Australia and he was working on the T3 seat and I would assume he has it approved by now.

He is in QLD but will freight around Oz.

Anyway worth checking with him.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks Skot and Greg very helpful.  Can you tell me where the child restraint fixings are located so they can check if there van is fitted with them?
The van is a Sept 1989 Caravalle.

Australian delivered T3 Syncros required ADR approved rear child restraint anchorages.  These are pictured below.

1.     This is a close-up of the LH side anchorage point at the front LH corner of the engine lid.

2.  This shows the location of all three anchorage points.  Because I have a Trakka camping conversion, the RH anchorage point is under the cupboard.  The position is indicated by the point of the screwdriver.

The reason for the three anchorage points is that ADR compliance for the T3 in Australia was on the basis of the rear seats being three-place.

A T3 Syncro owner is not restricted to these locations.  Different locations and designs can get ADR approval on the basis of an engineering certificate – as can seats and seat anchorages, of course.

Do the Telstra panel vans have them?

Phill,

I hope someone with a Telecom van will tell us.  Generally, it is far less expensive include things like that across all production than to selectively leave small items out.

Telecom vans don't have them they don't even have seat belt mounts as they are a commercial vehicle. I think you will find that the child restraint law came in after the syncro was already on sale. A late '89 will probably have them but I am pretty sure a '85-'86 won't.

I don't think that there is anything earlier than '88 here anyway, and they are rare.
I almost bought a rusty, rough '85 from S/Aust that had the spare in the boot, ala t2.

Telecom vans don't have child seat anchors. I think anything that started life as a panel van did not get them. Even the 92 Trakka converted multivan I owned did not have them because it was originally a panel.

As far as seats go, my advice would be to chase up a seat from a caravelle or a newer T4 or T5 purely from a safety point of view. I don't  like the idea of transporting people on two bits of ply held in place by two rock and roll hinges. Eddie.

Theo,

Thanks for that.  In respect of ARD compliance, it would have been classified as a commercial van with two ADR compliant seats – driver and front passenger – therefore no rear seat mounting points and no rear belt mounting points.

Eddie,

Later model seats will not be ‘safer’ because all seats have to meet the ADR requirements for load bearing.  In any event, if the seat mounting points are different, fitting a seat from a later model requires engineering certification.

The least hassle path is using original seats on original mountings because they are already ADR compliant.  (Insurance companies are particularly aware of this and are very quick to refuse payment if anything is not ADR compliant.)

In a crash situation, there are two important aspects.  The first is that the seat not become detached from its mounting points and the second is that the seat belt mounting points can take the full torso load.  ADR compliance ensures this.

As I have said elsewhere, any seat, seat mounting and belt mounting can be used but it needs engineering certification – which can be rather expensive.

Les, do ADRs take into account the forces placed on a seat from a rear end shunt?
