Safety Recall

Anyone with a 1990 year syncro followed this one up and if so, your findings? ...
Ken
Hi Ken
Wouldnt you think if there was a fault in the welding on the steering column then it would of shown itself since that recall was generated? Interesting though and Ill definitely have a closer look at the welding. I have normal steering. How hard would it be to convert it to power steering? Ive seen complete kits (?used parts) available from Germany for Euro500.
Cheers Dave

Dave,

VW wouldn't initiate this recall for no good reason. Can cost them a whole lot of money. They must have identified a problem, for which they have an obligation to remedy.

FYI, no recall is concluded until the manufacturer can satisfy the responsible government authority that all vehicles have been accounted for including registered, unregistered, no longer a going concern or gone to the wreckers etc.  Pretty hard task. Carried through to finality ... any recall could take a lifetime or beyond.

Another T3 syncro safety recall is the 20F3 involving the replacement of fuel injectors, engine bay fuel lines and associated connectors, limited to a certain range of vehicle VIN numbers. This one also will take a similar time-span.

Its quite conceivable there are syncros still out there that past and present owners have no clue that there vehicle MAY well fall within the range of vehicles entitled to be remedied under either/both recalls ... at no cost to them other than to arrange it and a small wait for it to be carried out. C'est la vie.

If you reckon it's a walk in the park to add power steering, I wish you well. I considered it years ago and decided not to bother.

Cheers.

Ken

Hello Ken,

Thanks for this link. I have a 89 Transporter and found out it has a recall. Who do I call or book it in for the recall check? Ateco Industries Pty Limited? does anyone have a number or contact?

Thanks,

Hi Leighton,

It's quite normal not to be a simple task, after all, VW staff take the view you are getting something at their cost, not yours, at this initial point they deny any knowledge of it or claim the recall has finished.
It can also be quite novel to see VW staff reaction when they see your T3. What's that!!!!????

If you are confident you do have a case (your vehicle "ticks all the boxes" for entitlement) including that the recall has not already been carried out with a previous owner, you can approach the Service Manager at any VW dealer of your choice and state your case, armed with appropriate documentation, hear/observe the reaction/decision, after which you can then decide how best to proceed. Try to be charming. You may get lucky.
Be sure to record (take notes) of this "first strike" experience, handy if you decide you are getting nowhere with said Service Manager and you up the anti to this ....

Write a letter stating your case and recent experience with said Service Manager to:

General Manager

Volkswagen Group Australia P/L

6 Lord St Botany NSW 2019

When and if they try to wheezle out of it again at this higher level, make sure you have their response in writing, then up the anti to this ....

Write a letter stating your case, including all documentation and including a copy of official VW letter of reply to:

Vehicle Recalls, Vehicle Safety Standards

Department of Transport and Regional Services

GPO Box 594

Canberra ACT 2601

If it is confirmed you do in fact have a case, they will advise you the course to follow to have the safety recall carried out by VW dealer of your choice.

Too easy. Most of this can be handled by you from in front of your computer.

Cheers.

Ken

Morning all;

Has anyone had the experience of having a child restraint system fitted to a dual cab, the fitting company I talked to want to drill holes in the rear wall at a height which lines up with the rear window and install spreader plates externally, not at all keen on this proposal, any help appreciated.

Regards

Bob

I know nothing about Dokas Bob. But I do know that at some time around '90-'91 they put three child restraints in the ceiling of the buses and then in "92 they had to fit the ones near the engine lid to conform to mandatory regs in Aus. I wonder if the latter Dokas had a factory set up you could copy. Anyone got a '92 doka? If they did it is probably the feeble plate they welded in the buses. Greg E

You would think if they had reason to fit them to the buses they should have fitted them to dokas. Unless there was some kind of commercial vehicle loop hole.

Panel vans don't have seat belt holes, so def no child restraints. But if the dokas have rear belts I would like to hear the argument why they shouldn't have restraints. I was an apprentice at the time but if memory serves me correctly they became law some time in '92. So if they were selling dokas this late they should have them. Greg

Hi Bob,
My 1990 Syncro came with a bar or beam as you have desribed that is secured by 2 bolts inside the air vents. The brand is KLIPPON and its approved by the MTA. Baby capsules and children can be harnessed in. I have a van but I cant see why the system couldnt be used on the DoKa. It looks like you might have to make the 2 holes and leave the bolts in when not in use if you want this system.
Safe Driving

Seat belts became compulsory from 1/1/1969 (ADR 4)
The wearing of seat belts became compulsory from 1972.
Child restraint mountings became compulsory from 1/7/1976 (ADR34)
Child restraint mountings became compulsory in forward control vehicles from 1/1/1986 (ADR34a)

Thanks Phill, I can never find the adrs when I need them and quite obviously my memory is failing me.
The thing I do remember is during my apprenticeship (started in '89) cars coming in that had to be retrofitted with child restraints. I wonder if there is an anomaly between state and federal legislation.
Like with seat belts. Victoria became compulsory in 1970 and NSW in 1971. Now what really confuses me is if there was child restraint laws in 1976 no one would have ever made those great big bars for the back of the t3. Even if we are talking '86 that would mean almost all syncros would have them. Am I right in saying the early ones did not have the roof mounts? And back to Bob, his doka should have them. What year is your doka Phill? Greg E

Had a look at the Tristar DoKa, no special restraints either, just 2 three point reels and the middle sash belt.

Window vans have them as well as rear seat belt mounts. Do panels?
Do Telstra vans have rear seat belt mounts and child restraint mounts?

Had a look at the Tristar DoKa, no special restraints either, just 2 three point reels and the middle sash belt.

Greg

Window vans have them as well as rear seat belt mounts. Do panels? Do Telstra vans have rear seat belt mounts and child restraint mounts?
