Hi all,
On my return from a fun but very muddy trip to Old Bar this year my speedo decided to start dancing to the tunes I was playing on my stereo.
Has anyone else had this issue and what was the fix?
Hoping not the cable…
Thanks,
Scott
Hi all,

One reason might be that somehow the speedo cable has twisted, and needs to be re routed in the most direct line possible.
Another maybe the plastic/metal cog is worn out at the hub…see Brickwerks: “Speedo Drive Repair Gear”…You nearly have to sell your Syncro to pay for it.
From my limited experience, just replacing the cable doesn’t fix it.
I just learnt to live with the bounce…can be very annoying.
Thanks Gerry.
All I have done so far is take off the binnacle cover and opaque plastic cover.
Will have a look this weekend.
The tick is really annoying but turning up the stereo seemed to fix that issue.
Yes…a Sub Woofer can help.
Hey Scott, old dry speedo cable most likely. Either slide the inner out and giveit a light spear of wheel bearing grease or drop a few drops of engine oil/gear oil down the inner.
Greg
Thanks Greg,
I assume its not broken or it would read zero whilst driving.
This just reads roughly 15- 20km/hr under whilst bouncing around.
I haven’t driven it since getting home and have only taken the binnacle cover off.
I will have a look over the weekend.
Cheers,
If it reads low at high speeds and that is a new symptom it may need a speedo head service. always worth lubing the cable first as it costs $0.
Yeah… its strange its like it has some severe resistance somewhere that grabs and releases.
Problem is with my Subie conversion, the speedo is connected to my speed sensor which the engine computer requires or it will start shutting down at higher revs. It uses a new sensor installed where the factory speed sensor for the factory cruise control would go.
Hence, I need it working! Not just to keep the police away but to ensure the van keeps running.
Try loosening off the two sensor mounting screws. I had that problem before. The screws were 1mm too long.
Heads Up Display (HUD)?
simple instal, inexpensive, reliable, accurate, easier to read, instant continuous display; also, wheel/tyre sizes irrelevant to getting accurate reading.
Consideration?
That wont drive my speed sensor so no good to me unfortunately.
I will try Phills suggestion with the sensor screws although strange it had been traveling fine for years with no issue then sudden started along the Old Bar road. That road is pretty rough though and could be more referred to as a track.
Put it all back together after squirting some lube down the cable.
Started off bad with a significant tick with speed all over the place.
I stopped took the cover off and then moved the cable attachment around a bit.
After that the speed was more accurate and significantly less tick.
I will adjust the speed sensor as well as per Phill’s suggestion and give that a go later.
Cheers,
Scott
I’ve picked up the same problem in the past few months, bouncing like crazy under 40km/h
I have rerouted the cable a few times with no success.
Arne and I tested all the parts individually last weekend and it is definitely a fault with the cable on mine.
Anyone have a new cable before I order one?
Brickwerks have the good Gemo brand.
I’m not sure if it’s different part numbers for left and right hand drive.
Anyone?
Ok after another round of WD40 sprayed down the cable and minor trimming of one of the speed sensor screws, I took it for another test run.
Its now butter smooth and accurate on speed - well as close as a VW speedo gets.
So to me - its all fixed! and at no cost…touch wood…
Good stuff Scott. You may find it comes back with WD. If it does try something thicker. G
It took a couple of goes to even get WD 40 to work.
Not sure how well anything thicker would get in such a small opening?
Anyway, I put the problem down to lack of use so the plan is to use the syncro a lot more. Hopefully that will ward off the problem for good!
I have changed mine now with a new gemo and the bounce is gone, but the cable is super loud some I am inclined to change it back
Gee I’m a whinger!
Maybe try oiling up the inside of your old cable and reinstalling it.
Worked for me.
Well after lubing up my speedo cable and getting it working - it worked great until today when it started bouncing again then just stopped.
Seems I need a new cable.
Who is the best source for this seeing we all have right hand drive versions here and this may be an issue with RHD vehicles.
I was thinking Brickwerks.
Not sure if any local suppliers would have one?
Cheers and Happy New Year!
