stainless steel cooling pipes

Thought I would run this as a separate thread. Anyone interested in SS cooling pipes to replace the original plastic ones (long ones from front to back)?

Looks like it could be a little cheaper to manufacture local, manufactured to match the originals and split in half for easier fitting. Would be in 304 stainless with bossing on ends for hose clamps.

If others were interested could get a batch made instead of just one set.

I'm in Bris so would need to factor in freight to your location.

Richard

Hi Richard,

mine need to be replaced at some stage sooner or later. Definitely interested, depend on pricing incl. shipping to MEL.

Cheers Arne

I am also interested for a set to Canberra

Peter

Thanks all for the replies, will get pricing for a batch and see what it comes to. Freight should not be too bad, especially if there are a few people in each destination to share costs.

If no one is in a rush, I will do one set first and confirm the fit fine to my bus before doing the rest.

Richard

Also Interested.
Thanks

Hi Richard,

Would be cheaper freight from Australia than USA or Germany and would also keep our well earned dollars down under?

Ralph
G'day!

Just checked current prices from my main parts supplier in Germany:
SS cooling pipes are 229€ - 19% tax + 60€ shipping to AUS (individual to each person) ends up currently at AUD 360-375 delivered (complete set incl. hoses to connect pipes). In a Group buy, prices should even come down a little bit.

Just for you thoughts of making them locally, if they match the price above (delivered) = perfect.
If they are much more expensive, may should consider the option from overseas. Exchange rate is very good atm to bring stuff in from Europe.

Cheers Arne

OK, sorry for the delay, with a short week last week was hard to get everything together.

So where I'm at currently, I have based this on a batch of 10, no issues doing more if required.

This would be a kit like you would buy, 4 stainless steel pipes (304, 1.6mm wall), locally made, copied off a sample. I have no asked for pricing for thinner wall, but 1.2mm or even 0.9mm may be better (and lighter). I don't expect that to change the cost much.

Hose is a good quality hose for cooling systems, I can get a few different brands through work

STRAIGHT RADIATOR HOSE STD EXITFLEX PP2008 - 1-1/2IN X 3FT - Powell Industrial

Not completely sold on the clamps yet, see the pictures for a few I have sourced to compare. These are all shown on heater hose, the blue is an original, the shiny gold one is one from china (got a few different ones to compare), the worm drive is the Norma one I posted up earlier. None of the Chinese ones have the clamp force of the originals even though they are the same size and thickness, so their out. The worm drive hose clamp is nice, good quality and has some "spring" but it doesn't seem to tighten up as evenly around the hose as the original style. Norma also do one like the original style. A little dearer but probably worth the extra $$. I will get one to compare.

There is also a T-bolt style hose clamp. Excellent clamps, nice wide band, you can do them up tight, but probably a little over kill for this application, and do not have the "spring" like the originals.

Prices are an estimate at this stage until I can get my pipes out to copy.

Complete kit will come in at ~$480-500. For people not in SEQ, probably best to freight to one location in each capital city to combine freight. Estimate of ~$80 (price per shipment give or take a bit depending how many are combined)

I was hoping for a little less, but that's where it's at currently. So, for all those who have replied and are still interested, I will start to make a list of names. If your no longer keen, let me know and I will leave you off

As a comparison, I only find one local supplier (Mick Motors) with a set in stock, I was quoted $1007. Van café have them on special currently $US270, freight is $US275 (so ~$733). Looking at quite a few other over seas sites ~$US300 seems to be the going price for them.

One other point, as my pipes are original plastic, I will need to nominate where the join goes(fairly simple), get one set made and confirm they fit in nicely, so I will need to plan on my bus being off the road for a bit. As the plastic ones are flexible, their rest shape out of the bus may not be perfect. (unless some one has a set of SS ones not installed to copy)

If this goes well I will look to do the same for the 2WD pipes also.

Sounds like a great price Arne, even a repeat batch locally (setup costs etc for paid for in first batch) would be ~$400ea, plus I don't have the bus off the road testing a sample :)

The batch size would need to be 20-30 to match those prices.

Richard

I'll get an official quote for single purchases and also for a full batch (10 sets or more). Ones I got accurate prices incl. shipping I let the group know.

Thanks Arne,

If 2WD kits are similar priced I will need a set for my other bus at some stage also.

Hi Arne,
That price sounds great. One thing to keep in mind tho when ordering a group batch is the import tax so it might work out cheaper to only order 2 sets delivered at a time to keep it under the $1000 mark?
I’m sure tho that we can still get a good discount for a large order by getting it delivered this way?
Anyway, just thought I’d put that out there…
Thanks for doing the research and ground work, Richard and Arne!
One day soon I hope to get around to doing a report on my newly restored, re powered, back on the road Syncro…(Loving it!)
Cheers all,
Andy Sinclair

Hi Arne, were you able to get the pricing yet?

I have a few more bits I need to order, but want to hold off until this part is sorted.
