Xzellent ! Let’s write it Hardnut, thanks Les.

Name usage varies.  Within my family and to close friends, I am Leslie.  Outside of that, it is generally Les.  In any event, Australians are given to shortening names, something not always appreciated.

As Harmut has suggested, I picked up a spare from eBay sometime ago. It was originally procured for another group member but had gotten one elsewhere. I kept it on the shelf in case some needs one in a hurry. I don't recall the cost and would have to check my records. I believe it was about US$75. International Priority a shipping is about US$15-18. Try pricing one with your VW dealer. It's about 3 times that here in the US.

Anyway, before you spring for one of these patch harnesses, you should know that members of the Vanagon List have successfully used less expensive substitutes to the harness. BenH was kind enough to recap and post details written by others here:

http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_intermittent_syndrome.htm

Let me know if I can help.

You could ask BenT to look out for one or watch eBay in the US in the meantime you can try mine if you like. I would need you postal. Up to you.

Hi All,
Loose wire making poor contact on top of stater motor requiring cleaning and recrimping after driving over rough road fixed the starting problem. Made some enquiries into the empeadance harness on the AFM to fix the "Vanagon Syndrome". Some people out there in VW land try to rip you off as someone quoted me $530 claiming there were only 2 left in the world and he had them. Other more genuine people in the VW community explaining how to solder in a resister and dissconnect the earth wires in the AFM to also correct the problem. Does anyone out there have a second hand empeadance harness for sale? Many thanks for all the good advice given to solve my starter issue. I purchased the Dubflecta wind deflectors from Rob recently and they look and work fantastic. Great for keeping the cabin cool
Cheers Dave

I'm sure, Harmut means well. He is aware of a couple of situations when forum members ask me to locate/acquire parts in the US. Then subsequently bought them elsewhere leaving me "holding the bag" so to speak. It would be fine if I was a business enterprise. Often, I buy the part and transfer to the forum member at zero profit to me. It's a service to the community which Hartmut provides himself.

The point you might have missed (and he did not) was that I have an AFM patch harness that you seek. I would not want to burden Hartmut of keeping it on his shelf when it serves just as well on mine. This is not about the money but community. Otherwise, I would be asking twice the price I paid because that is the going rate for them in the US.

With regards to VW inventory control, they frequently quote what is "in the country" in every country. It doesn't always mean they will be NLA ( no longer available). I recall coming into possession of the "last Syncro shift knob in the US". I bought it immediately. A few weeks later, more inventory came in from Europe to acquire the title 'last shift knob in America.'

On a side note, Aussie Syncro shift knobs and those on American Syncros are the same. Those on German Syncros are different. Can anyone tell me what's different?

Ben T, I was under the impression you guys had "L" for low gear on yours. We got the "G" for gelande (spelling?) like the Germans. Greg E
