Sydney Nationals 2010

Scott,

I'm with you, no.1 offender is def the sheep dip gate out front. Has to go Peter, period.

Did he not win The Nationals 2010 Wooden Spoon for that desecration? Worthy contender eh.

Second to go is the instrument cluster ....... now that is just soooooooooooooo yester century. Museum piece comes to mind.

Then yes, go for the de-coupler, this has my seal of approval! .. haha. Funny how de-couplers are so flavour of the month lately.

As far as The Nationals went, an amazing turn out of 15 syncros in one place and I believe one parked also close by (white), wonder who that was? Good to see new faces also. All went way to fast, didn't get to tackle my "task list" either. Oh dear.

Cheers.

Ken

Peter,

The first major work should be to get rid of that bull bar. Then the de-coupler, then you will need some new rear gas struts for your tail gate.

I replaced my gas struts a year ago and it makes such a difference not having the tailgate drop on your head.

Excellent vehicle by the way and I was amused how Suncamper drain the parcel try on the front roof with a small conduit either side.

Cheers,

Skot.

I have sent an email to Florian to make arrangements to get one ASAP. Hart has convinced me that this should be the first major work on the Syncro before anything else. Also after chatting to all the owners at the Nationals, there is no doubt this is a priority.

Cheers, Peter

Bob,

I think with my current situation that I could manage an over night camp but that would be about it. I still haven't got my second daughters bed sorted yet and the fridge is not installed.

Kids always have birthday parties, swimming, family visits, christenings etc and I still have my 71 model kombis engine out whilst I clean it up, replace the heads, push rods, rear main seal and gland nut plus every gasket in sight and I stupidly also decided to paint the tinware whilst I was at it - what a bastard of a job that is.

Hence, time is minimal as the 71 needs to be ready for Valla which isn't that far away. Note that will be a good get together that is coming up shortly.

My wife requires flushing toilets and hot showers. Same for my 2 princesses.

Me - a loaf of toilet roll, a shovel and a quiet tree and I am happy.

BBQ's are good. National parks are also good.

Cheers,

Thanks guys. Any ideas where I could lay my hands on a decent bull bar. The one on my T3 Trakka was perfect. Open to suggestions. I have ordered a tacho and small digital clock from the US. Should be here in a week to ten days. Then will try and source a decent speedo in KPH (with a tripmeter).

Thanks also Scott for the heads up on the rear struts. I had noticed they are on the way out. I put new ones in the roof of my T3 and they were fantastic, so will use the same source in Taree.

Peter,
I'll stand corrected by you no doubt in due course but my experience suggests you need to replace the complete instrument cluster AND buy as well a separate KPH only speedo. The cluster ideally should be a late model that includes the circuitry and warning LED for (I think) oil temp or oil pressure .... can't remember which. A clue as to the latest model is the presence of the "oxygen sensor change" (OXS) LED light on the bottom (3rd tier) of LEDs you see in the centre of the instriument cluster. See the attached pic. You may well find that trying to add later components to your ancient cluster, their is no provision for the digital clock and the electrical wiring ribbon will be wrong as well so you won't be able to connect much at all. Also need to change the "fasten seat belt" warning to "Park Brake" warning. Essentially the only workable route for you is to replace the whole cluster and optionally the housing cover and plastic inside cover sheet. All this should have been discussed on Sunday but realistically, with so many syncros present, the meet should have been a week long to do proper justice to essentials like "show and tell" and magfest. I may have other pertinent pics of clusters/components if you need more clues.

Cheers.

This is pretty much the same situation - happy for an overnighter in the bush (just me or eventually me and Max) or something with better facilities if the whole family.

Within 2 hours striking distance of Sydney is good.

Thanks for your initiative.

Ken,
There is no early and late.
The OXS is a local option for North America (and I think Sweden)
You can get the tacho and matching printed circuit and use your old cluster sans clock.
You must use a syncro speedo, not a 2wd.

Phill,
So to do as you suggest ... simply re-use the original cluster housing, any advice as to how to marry in the digital clock so that its facing looks exactly like the later model cluster genuine article? TIA.
Cheers.

Ken,

What is this later model thing? There is no early and late. They are just options from '86-'92.

Yes, you are correct. If you want the digital clock, you will need the complete cluster.

Guys, this is all very confusing indeed. I guess I just wait until my stuff arrives and then I will find out what obstacles I have to overcome drawing on previous experience of other owners. An interesting challenge and if necessary, I will keep buying more bits until I have it right. I do not want a MPH speedo though!!!

Peter

PS. I have not had any suggestions yet about where I could find a decent bulbar.

Guys, see attached photo of a cluster for sale on the Samba site. Are you saying my only option is to buy a complete set like this and then integrate with what I have already? This would mean keeping my current speedo for the moment, assuming it would fit?

Peter

It depends what you want.

If you do not want the clock, then you will need the tacho and the printed circuit.

If you want the clock you will need the complete cluster and make sure that it is working as they are known to fail.

If you need the trip speedo, then maybe you should buy the complete cluster from Europe.

See what Mike Plompen has for sale.

I concur with Ben’s opinion.  Whilst it is certainly possible, it would be up to the customer (us) to give the machinist an accurate description of what has to be done.  It would be far better to get one that is already machined by the supplier and known to be correct and accurate.

Greg and Micheal, although I dont believe that the actual machining of the nose cone is a real complex job.Finding a machine shop that is prepard to do the work or one that knows what you are talking about might be the problem.I believe it would work out dearer and more of a headache to get the machining done here. Not to mention your bus will be of the road for some time.
Just pay the core deposit, send your old one back. You will have a decoupler that works and you will be happy! Its that easy. You wont regreat it.

Thanks for all the responses Les, Ben, Scott and Greg. Lets just see what Florian can do.

Good morning,

first of all it seems that some of you sent me direct mails that didnt come through - if you havent heard back from me please double check the order email address - decouplers@gmail.com or just grab the phone and call me.
regarding machining yourself - it is not necessarily difficult, but unless you have a lot of custom jigs you wont be able to do it with the same precision. A few people in the u.s. wanted to go that route, all of them but one decided not to do it after they saw my instructions. the one that did it was a machinist himself and he had to make new bronze bushings because the holes he drilled ended up being 0.01mm too large.
I am in final assembly stages here of a set of six and can send two of those to australia. As I said before, I needed to get $1000USD shipped, which is the same I charge for the Americans, even though Australia shipping is more expensive. Now that you guys will need it shipped in two separate packages and pay via paypal, I would say that we split the addtl costs of about $40, for a total of US$1020 plus US250 core deposit.
At todays exchange rate, that equals AUS$1200 for the decoupler and AUS$300 core.

Hi Scott. A report to the group on progress with sinking more cash into my new toy. I have ordered a decoupler this morning.

Found a new bulbar in Sydney. The Company that used to make them for Camperise and Suncamper (don’t know why mine has the sheep gate!!!) had two. One painted white and the other not. I am picking up the unpainted one on 25 June so all the Syncronauts will be happy with that, as will I. It is the same as many around that I have seen as it retains the plastic side bumper ends. I think it the same as Harts.

Could be a doing a little exploratory drive to Point Plomer with a mate on Saturday to see how she performs. He only has a Hilux!!!!

Cheers, Peter

I wish people would stop doing solo syncro Point Plomer trials!!!

We need a group trip/trial!!!
