syncro driveshaft

I took the Drive shaft off, for economy, a few years ago and didn't mark the position. I put it back on a few days ago and it vibrates like crazy at 55-70 k's. VC works well. How can I sort this out? Any information gratefully received. Rubber absorber at the rear ok?
Do I just have to keep trying on numerous bolt holes until it works?
I have access to another shaft a few hours south. Any use?

When I took it off, it was working fine other than a slight vibration at 60kmh.
Thanks, Geoff
If it's just a matter of getting each flange back to where it was before, that would sure be nice.

you can study online all day long solutions for 'syncro driveshaft vibrations.'

one trick, not saying it's your solution, is loosenging the front diff mounts a little..then driving a while to get things to settle into place . reducing vibrations. I think that might be on Van Cafe's site.

I am not convinced espeically that there is a 'for sure Real ' solution and repair for syncro driveshaft vibration isuses ..
there's the slip yoke upgrade style driveshaft.
there's the cardon joint style drivehshaft .
and on and on.
for a simple improvement I would at least try rotating a flange 180 degrees , things like that.

I have even read about syncro owners who removed their driveshaft, and got more vibrations than with the shaft installed.
Be sure the u-joint/s is/are smoothly pivoting, and not stiff or loose . They are not normally replaceable . though syncro driveshafts can be converted to conventional replaceable u-joints.

Burley Motorsports says their syncro driveshaft works excellently and they sell all they can make.

it's a black art I think.

I will employ these magical solutions in hope.
On another forum a friend wrote that he has had success by rotating the shaft so the rubber is at the front, and going through the gears while on a hoist with the flange bolts loosely done up, then tightening after every thing sorts itself out.

Geoff, whilst chasing driveshaft vibrations,I found that driveshaft position/on flange didnt make any difference.
If the shaft is balanced it shouldnt matter were it is.
Did you check the uni joints for freeness?also were the caps press into the shaft are prone to wear.
When you remove or install the shaft you are meant to loosen front diff mounts. This is so you dont damage the unis.
I now have a Hardy Spicer shaft with slip yoke that still vibrates at
high speed(fortuantly it is higher than the speed limit,so I can live with it),but are still chasing damm vibrations.
I am going to laser allign the transaxle and front diff, since I can see these angles are not right since I installed the Subaru engine.
Good luck.

Was the Hardy Spicer unit a special order? They don't seem to offer VW parts after a quick browse on their site just then.
Thanks
Geoff
hi Geoff,
I    was maybe going to mention swapping the driveshaft end-for-end to put the rubber thing at the front...but thought perhaps better not too.

if you count that...swapping end for end, and that each flange will go together two different ways ...
how many permutations of how it will fit is that ?

running with all four wheels in the air and bolts loosened somewhat so they can 'settle into position' sure won't hurt to try.

oh...I have read this too..
about actual balancing ..
not like getting the driveshaft balanced off the van, which is possible,
but doing it yourself.
Get some small weight like a medium heavy washer and clamp it with a large hose clamp at a position near one end of the driveshaft. Then test drive ..if it's worse, try another position, etc... just try various balancing weight positions until you get a significant improvement.
Sounds exhaustive, but thought I'd mention it so it can be in your bag of syncro tricks to try.

Geoff,it was a special order.
I took my VW one to be serviced and found that it was worn where the end caps fit into the shaft. To fix the VW one they were going to 'knurl' the shaft,so that the end caps would fit snug. This sounded not like a permanate fix to me.
They quoted me over $600 for the VW shaft or $800 for a new dynamic balanced shaft(balanced to 6000rpm),bigger more available and cheaper unis and slip yoke.
The VW unis rrp is over $250,and there is two types. The cheaper are not the right ones for over 1000rpm.I do not have the part numbers. The part number is here in the forum somewhere.
In all I am happy with my new shaft since the vbrations I was chasing(around 60kays)are completley gone.Just need to get rid of the one around 120km.
There is a photo comparing the two shafts in the photo section of this forum.

I know what you mean -the math goes exponential.
I am thinking I may have damaged the universals getting them off and they may be wrecked. I have looked at Burley MS and could get a good one for $695 from USA with the AUD going gangbusters presently.
Cheers
Geoff
Check the uni joints one of them is more than likely notchy and that would be causing your vibration. When you take the shaft out pivot the flanges from side to side if you feel any type of tight spot that is your problem...

Thanks, it is looking like stuffed uni joints. I will have a look at this other shaft down south, but the American shaft is more likely a solution. Freight costs should be alarming.
Thanks again.

GoWesty do a complete shaft as well.

All,

'in the end i fitted a decoupler' --- for the benefit of newer members, what Alf actually fitted , was a VC ( viscous coupling ). However, there maybe is

merit in this and we should maybe ask the question, if anybody who suffered vibrations had a DC (decoupler ) fitted. Would be of interest.

Good question Hart.
I still experience vibration with the decoupler decoupled. If anything my vibration is slightly better with the decoupler coupled. The only way I can rid of my vibration(120km)is to remove the shaft altogether.
After purchasing a new shaft and having it balanced twice since I bought it,I am now of the opinion that the angles of the transaxle/front diff are incorrect.I am going to laser allign these and space the engine bar to correct these angles.
I have tried the loosen front diff mount method,I have replaced the rubber mounts at the front diff.
Anyone know where I can purchase a cheap laser pointer?

Just curious what shaft you bought to replace the original?

That's a bugger that it didn't solve the vibration issue, only leaves the alignment then I guess

Is this where you are going with it?

Good luck and let us all know how you go.

Ben,

How is the Scooby donk travelling?

Try Clint's Crazy Bargains - I have found a few reasonable cheap crap tools there that sort of work. My nail punches are mainly all still alive but only through lack of use.

Occasionally Aldi pops up with some laser levels. Keep an eye out. I will let you know if I come across any.

Are you heading to the Nationals this year?

Mel wants to put the syncro in again - although I don't really care. We are bringing down both the syncro and the 71 so she can bring the syncro down early.

Cheers,

Skot

BenC
