Hey Scott, the problem re the injection is that it is common rail diesel. So basically a fuel rail and injectors simillar to efi. A lot higher pressure though. Some have a fuel pump mounted where the previous generation engine had an injector pump, so they would be easier. This subi engine to my knowledge has only ever been common rail so probably not a possibility. Greg E

The problem is most manufactures are now using a can bus system. This combined with the fact that traditional diesel injection pumps cannot be mounted on the engine makes a conversion very hard. That is tricking the engine control unit into thinking there are many other control units hooked into the can bus when they are not. Greg E

Re Subaru diesel.Yes they will be very popular.Only one or two running around in the States.I believe,BenT or Turbovans could confirm.
In the states the pick was(when I was researching) still the earlier ej22 as it is in abundance over there, plus they are all tight, trying to do there conversions on the cheap.Others seem to go down the H6 path which would be nice, but I definatley would loose my licence then.
The ej25 out of an Aussie outback is a good one for us Aussies,as there are heaps available and the wiring isnt as complicated as post 2001 models, although there is still an immobilizer, which is not that much of an issue.A very smooth and torquey engine.

hi Greg,
perhaps.
and even if a less evolved diesel fuel system and injectors could be adapted........
It's likely that some of the low emissions combined with great power and good fuel economy would be lost.
Like it could run, but maybe not like it's really supposed to.

never say never of course , and diesel engines are modified all kinds of ways, just like gasoline ones are.

it's just an internal combustion engine after all, not like it's a whole new invention or anything like that really.

Ben,to answer to your question

About two days before this noise was first noticed, I crossed a river with a very steep approach and slightly less steep departure angle. On the departure the rear end bottomed out on the ground/rock with a loud bang. Got out to check for damage, nothing visible, put it down to the tow bar bottoming out on the steepish departure angle. Brian is of the opinion that maybe the engine mounts may have been knock out of kilter setting up a possible vibration/tapping/knocking sound. This sound is not present with engine idling or cruising along at say 75kmp along the flat, but as soon as the engine is under load in come the pots and pans. Get to the top of the hill and coast down or put in the clutch or put her into Gods gear and noise gone.

Micheal, the Smallcar engine cradle uses the VW enginebar(moustach bar),VW engine mounts. It then wraps around the aftermarket alluminium sump and bolts to the Subaru engine mountings(Subaru crankcase) with small clearance. It is totally different to the original VW set-up.
Maybe your mounts are in need of replacement, but I dont think it would cause your pots and pans.
Does your noise changes with engine or road speed?
