TYRES - What R U Running?

Looking great Scott, it will be interesting if you keep fuel economy details if it makes any difference.
What about steering, do you notice a change? I guess with power steering it will not be noticeable if there is a difference.
Do your tires wear evenly (given the offset is 5mm different to standard?)
Richard

Hi Richard,

My rear tyres don’t wear unevenly at all - however my left front has been a issue for a while. Had some changes made recently as the camber was off. Had the Gowesty top ball joint spacers installed and adjusted the front suspension. Much better now.

Cant notice anything with the steering as power steering seems to over-ride everything.

Good post, finding the right tyres is getting harder as the options are shrinking in the 15" size range. I used to run BFG, great in the bush but noisy on the highway, and the coarse tread pattern and large OD robbed power and fuel. Then I went to Firestones which are also very strong tyre with a a tread pattern better suited to bitumen than they are to the bush. I noticed after I fitted them that the van was much easier to push around the shed, which means they had less rolling resistance to the BFG’s. The only downside was that they rode like a bullock dray until they warmed up. Now I’m running Toyo AT’s which seem to have a strong sidewall - no spikes or gashes driving through the mulga - and an OD fairly close to that of the original Michelins fitted back in 1989. The performance, fuel economy, ride and handling of the Toyo’s is the best compromise so far, but without the outright off-road ability of the BFG’s.

Hi all, have a question for a friend looking at new tires. He is going to 17" rims and is looking to fit BFG KO2’s, there are options of 235/65’s or 225/65’s

He’s chasing a larger diameter for taller gearing as he has a Subaru, he currently run’s 215/70R16.

The question is what sort of clearance issues are there with 225 or 235 tires?
He has stock (14") rear swing arms and is at a standard ride height. His driving is mostly on the road even though he wants KO2’s.

I see above Scott, you run a slightly wider offset, were other mods needed to fit the tires you have?

Thanks

Hi Richard,

I havent done anything to the arches but it is lifted.

It gives the drivers side spat a tickle every now and then. But no issues.

The ET25 helps a lot.

My spare wheel is an ET35 and it causes the tire to rub on the rear suspension arm - getting that sorted now.

Hey Cathrich,

when your mate gets his 17”, what’s he doing with the old 16”?

Thanks
Gaetan

They are for sale, I’ll get details, but are a set of 5 Audi A4 rims with KO2’s with ~90% tread. He has the nuts also as he needed new ones for the new rims.
They are in Brisbane.

He has fitted the 17’s and look great. It’s dropped 300rpm at 100kph!
Richard

That sounds awesome! Yes pls if you could get price / pics I’d love to see. I’m assuming they’re a straight fit on the 92’ T3 with standard disks up front and drums at the rear?
Thanks, Gaetan

Sorry for the delay Gaetan. See picture. It’s a set of 5, they are powder coated black, 2011 Audi A4 rims, 16" x 7" , ET40 (only 4 are powder coated). They were on a '92 Syncro with no issues. 4 x BFG K02 tires are used ~90% tread, the spare is unused. 215/65R16, so close to stock diameter.
He’s after $850 for the set. Comes with nuts and center caps with VW on them.

If your interested, I’ll send you his phone number. If you need them shipped, I can see what I can organize from work.

Richard

Hi Richard,

I dont think the photo has come through.

I certainly cant see it?

Anyway - maybe send the photo again.

Thanks,

Scott

Thanks Scott, let me know if you can see it this time?
Richard

Yes definitely works now.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Richard,
yes I’m interested - just what I was looking for really!
Could you find out about shipping costs to Fremantle WA 6160?
Thanks,
Gaetan

I’ll check at work tomorrow Gaetan.

Thank you! Also did you have that phone number and name so I can call him?

Looking really smart with the Audi 16” and K02s!
Now I need to mod my spare wheel holder to accept the new wheel size, also need to make some tube extensions for the rear wheels hub caps to allow for the protruding centre nuts.

They look sensational Gaetan.

Did they require any spacers to fit them?

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Gaetan.
Cool Van…
Can you put photos up on the interior?

That looks excellent. Interesting spare wheel carrier. Is that a bar running across the front (left to right) to support it? The 16" rims should let more air through for the radiator than stock rims!!
With the center caps, it might be easier to 3D print new longer ones for the rear.

Yes I have this custom made from carrier that came with the van - great as it front fit the under tray. It’s a bit ghetto made out of scaff and wood, but after modding it to fit the Audi wheel I’ll spray it so it looks better!
Great idea about the 3D printing, now I need to find a 3D printer lol…
I was going to make tubes of the correct diameter to accept the cap at top and fit in hub around the bolt, I’ll see which works out better!

Cheers
