Viscous coupling replacement

I have been following the discussion on the various preferences for the drivetrain setup on the Syncro. It has been very enlightening as I have discovered that my Syncro nearly comes to a halt when turning on hard surfaces leading me to think about replacing my vc. I have searched some websites and come up with -
Van Cafe - rebuilt vc - $695.00 US + $300.00 'core charge' refunded.
Bully Syncro Specialist - orig vw part - E745.00 - parts sent after payment.
I would appreciate advice from members about other suppliers and their experience in dealing with them.
As a point of interest my Syncro has done nearly 270,000 km, nearly all on hard surface city driving.

Regards
Jon Elliott

I can recommend classic services in Germany. I bought a oem one from them a few years ago and they were the cheapest then. Transaction was all via email and fax and nice and easy.

Hi Jon,

I can add to that list;

Syncro services reco vc 600 Euros + 250 Euro 'core charge' refundable http://www.syncro-services.com/index_modi_eng.html

Syncro Spares UK also will offer a reco VC - email them
http://www.syncrospares.co.uk/

Busman.be
http://www.busman.be/pagina64aa.html
Brand New VC, no 'core charge' 1160 Euro
Reco VC 610 Euro + 'core required' 610 Euro not currently available
Sports Reco VC 630 Euro + 'core required' not currently available

All these guys I'm quite sure are good blokes.

I'm surprised I couldn't find a VC on the GoWesty site when I had a look. Also has anyone found the VC on the classicparts.de site and a price?

Not sure how shipping from the various locations would factor in. If you are just purchasing a VC, and possibly a decoupler, it might be able to to be shipped by the standard postal service. If you want to get some other goodies at the same time, then shipping by a courier company of course may cost a lot more.

Sorry, that does not work.   Open the URL, go to search and enter ‘coupling’.

They show several.

Thanks to all those who replied to my email re vc availability.
My search of sites has come up with -

BULLY SYNCRO SPECIALIST - new, orig vw part - $1008
BUSMAN - new part - $1569 no donour required
CLASSIC PARTS CENTRE - genuine vw part - $2164 + $483 deposit
                                               - refurbished -         $  885 + $483 deposit
SYNCRO SERVICES - overhauled/new parts - $812 + $338 deposit
VAN CAFE - rebuilt by german Transaxles of America - $660 + $285 deposit

Prices are in Australian dollars

Has anyone had any recent dealings with any of these firms?
Any reports of the reliability of the rebuilt vc's?
Are there in fact any new, genuine vw vc's available (see Van Cafe's comments on their vc page).
Have I missed any firms?

Any contributions from members would be appreciated.

Thanks for that site. I must have had an old one as this list of parts was not displayed. I have ordered a new vc.

Volkswagen Australia has a long standing policy of converting VW owners into Toyota owners via spare parts pricing.   Some Toyota spares are formidably expensive but nothing like Volkswagen Australia .

I know you know almost every VW site "out there" but I wondered if you had seen this one.

If you haven't seen it I thought it may give you a few ideas to add to the Syncro !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bruce CQ
Bruce,
Nice find. 20 years soiree around the planet eh. Forget the gold mine, I assume they own an iron ore open cut in the Pilbara ... huge wealth, few taxes.
Actually Trakka might like to see this setup, there's a heck of a lot they might learn. They may finally get it right.
I'm curious to know the all up weight though. All that on Michelin X tyres and in 2WD. Can you believe it!
Wouldn't Oz bound backpackers just lurv it.
Heh I think I'll now strip down the syncro entirely and start afresh ... heh I'm motivated, all these ideas!
Do wonders for my next show and tell.
Cheers.

Hullo everyone,
I need to replace my vc so I am trying to locate suppliers and prices that are currently available. I have a decoupler to install so to do both replacements at the same time seems a good idea.
So farI have found -
Van Cafe rebuilt units US$695.00 + $300.00 refundable for old unit.
Berndt Jaeger new units 1600.00 euros + 350.00 refundable for old unit (ouch!).
AA Transaxle rebuilt units US$795.00 (still have to check on refundable deposit for old unit).
I would appreciate any help and advice members can give.
JonE
Maybe someone on here that has done a solid shaft will sell you their old one cheap for the exchange?
Then you can sell yours on to another member.

Jon,

Also look at Mike Plompen (http://www.busman.be/).  Not sure what Aiden Talbot (IK) is doing these days.

The VW Classic parts organization might also have them.
