Forget a rear wheel carrier .... not available locally, difficult to decide which OS one is best, very expensive to import.
Simplest, easiest and cheapest option is to use a 15" tyre that fits underneath, like the BFG T/A 215 75 R15. That at least uses up the best space, out of sight, out of mind and keeps the van more balanced and frees up access to your rear door. All good.
Hartmut might pipe up here about Seikel springs.
Cheers.

Hi Eric,
Yes, I installed SEIKELs 2 yrs back. I wanted to copy the red Canadian[ex Sweden] Syncro DC. However, I was never really satisfied with the harsh, rough riding “comfort” and have decided that enough is enough and time has come to put back what was original. At the time when I fitted those springs I often loaded the truck with 1.4 t plus trailer 1t, and all this with 16 in Merc rims! Since I am now semi retired I try not to do these things any more , rather enjoy the company of the Tristar, it even got a Supercheap garage. So, if you are still hot on springs, mine will be available in August ex Port Macquarie NSW.Best Regards Hartmut

Hey syncro owners. Where do I get a swing away wheel carrier to mount on the back of my van in australia? Anyone build their own or adapt one from a different car. Hoping I won't have to buy international again. Also has anyone run a set of seikel springs on their van? opinions would be appreciated. cheers
there are numerous carrier solutions, though non of the aftermarket
ones came from OZ. Your best bet would be an import from the UK,
Canada or Germany. I have an overview of most of the carriers
available online, along with some very nice DIY variants. Maybe that
might be an option for you.
As of now you can still find them here: http://www.easy2design.de/bulli/racks/
In the near future the whole collection will be migrated into: http://www.ig-syncro16.de/wiki/Reserveradtr%C3%A4ger

Eric, I might add also that it is imperative to also instal 23 degr. Tilt angle VCs [only six of them though as the outer fronts do have them installed ex worx]. I have replaced one yesterday [rear outer] which was completely worn out right at the end of the groove. Also you have to be aware that the shock travel could be too little and would have to be replaced also. All in all a tall order..........Hartmut

I have got a set of 6 23 degree cv's enroute as I plan to lift the car with or without seikel springs.
I'm located in adelaide. Let me know if/when your seikel springs become available.I may be up your way in august. Definately be interested in buying them. I've also been informed Bernd Jaeger has exclusive rights to sell seikel springs. I find many of his prices less than competitive though.
Ken, as much as I'd like to use the front tire carrier I will have to buy one for the rear as the tires I'm fitting are at the upper limit 74.4cm. Reason being I have a 6.166 gear ratio and tires of this size will bring my gearing back to stock again the way I like it.
Will try some of the links posted up. I do like wheel carriers available from syncro-hospital. Think I'll wait for some other bits to arrive first though as I have syncro parts from 3 countries floating somewhere in the ocean towards oz though I hadn't thought to pack a wheel carrier in with the transaxles.

Dear Erik, Martin, Presume you have looked through the photos section of our site as it contains a variety of local and overseas wheel carriers. Mine is the double wheel carrier which combined genuine VW rear hinges with locally fabricated bar work etc. If you have a bull bar you could even consider the benefits of fitting the spare on the front.Mine has a plate which allows this for my 16" wheels but I tend to not use it as I think it has been located too high and obscures forward vision. My pop top roof rack even incorporates an inset for a spare wheel including clamp down plate but I prefer not to have the weight of a heavy wheel up high.. When I bought my vehicle from the original owner he told me he had fitted stiffer front springs in 1998 which I like. He said he fitted them because he felt the originals were not as good in their off road control and could bottom out. I thought he said they were Seikels but he included the Autohaus Hoch VW dealer invoice for DM457 incl presumably VAT of 63.04. From this I have extracted the following: "ES BEDIENTE SIE STEFAN DREHER. 251 411 105F 952 2 SCHRFEDER 394 >>> ELEKTROTEILE SIND VOM UMTAUSCH AUSGESCHLOSSEN<<< WIR SIND FACHLEUTE-WIR ENTSORGEN UMWELTGERECHT. Perhaps one of our German linguists could translate or throw some light on what this says. I do hope I haven't muddled the invoice with the one I have for a blow-up doll discreetly sent under plain wrapper by a continental gentleman! Sorry, of course yours is already in the collection... we have been
emailing about that a few months ago :) See: http://www.easy2design.de/bulli/racks/large-103.html

I don't think it is a benefit to keep the air from flowing through. I
have standard watercooler, oilcooler and intercooler in the front, I'd
rather see a solution for getting more than less air into this
place :) Plus the winch in front will already be somehwat in the way...

Right... the roof only for lighter stuff.

He ordered two time "Schraubenfeder" aka "Spring" with part number 251
411 105F, which is a standard syncro front spring with 2 purple
markings.

Almost :)))
Btw, the most common spring being used to raise the syncro a by 2-3cm
adding a little stiffness would be the 2WD transporter spring with the
number 251 411 105C

I've read that the 16's have a CV the same size as a Porsche 930, which has a larger diameter, requiring larger diameter output flanges at the gear box and at the hub, also the 930 CV's have a different number of splines requiring different axle's.
The Type 1, 2, and 4 - CV spline count for the axle hole is 33.
The Porsche 930 - CV spline count for the axle hole is 28.
Type 1 (Bug), a Type 4 (Porsche 924/944/VW Thing-181), Type 2 (Bus), the Porsche 930.
Maximum Angularity for each CV is listed below,
Type 1 is 12 degrees
Type 2 is 17 degrees
Type 4 is 22 degrees
930 is 25 degrees
So... what you seek is a Porsche 944 CV, this is a direct bolt on replacement for the standard joint, simple! if only paying for the six joints was that easy. Still cheaper than converting to 930 CV's.
Source of info.....http://www.blindchickenracing.com/How_to/CVJoints_Axles/cv_joints_101.htm

i believe the same CV is fitted to the AUDI 200 series, the audi 100's use the same cv as the 14" syncro.
have a look on uk e-bay for cheaper parts, you'll be suprised! german e-bay has tones of stuff but comunication and shipping are a problem!

Thanks Martin - I agree with your thinking plus some useful and interesting information for me who obviously can't even guess German! The original Syncro springs were given to me with other spare parts and would only have been on for 6 years before replacement. I'd be happy to pass them on for free to anyone with a use for them. I live in Melbourne.
Cheers

I note that ETKA lists five separate numbers for front drive shafts, specifying wheel diameter and with/without front diff lock, plus a sixth number in the remarks column against 16” wheels. The diff lock number is against 14“ and 16”.

To add to this confusion, I have one new front outer left over from when I replaced nearly all of the CVs to eliminate a truly loud and worrying noise just after I bought the vehicle. This one is labelled 251 498 099 E. It was made by GKN and also carries the name Glaenzer Spicer. This number, however, does not appear on the joints itself, only on the box. There are several numbers on the joint, presumably GKN/Spicer numbers.
Can anyone offer any further explanation for this range of numbers and applications?

Jon, we ship quite a lot from Germany lately. This week we received a POST parcel weighing 12 kg and costing us 70 Euro divide by .58 = $120.70 . not bad although this was sea freight which so far has always been shipped by air. We found it worth taking that risk... You can import up to $1000 invoice value without ANY customs hassles, just pick up from Post and off you go . and when importing from Germany , they have 19% added value tax, so it’s always good to find out if the sale price inclusive tax of which you can take off19% . Like him or not, Bernd Jaeger is very straightforward and subtracts the tax , whilst SYNCRO SERVICES do have an inland and an export price , the latter not much cheaper than the inland price. Hartmut

Thanks for offering a camp spot I would definately call in. Actually going to brisbane to have custom veedub fit a 2.5 subaru engine in my syncro. Had thought to do it myself but time is money and my syncro project although on track is rather enormous with a tight deadline.
Martin, The option of placing a spare wheel carrier on the front of a bullbar is appealing but as you say restricting airflow is an issue. I consider a bullbar a necessity when traveling through oz so It is something I've been searching for. Do you have an alloy bullbar and what is the impact on approach angle? erik

Think I'll wait for some other bits to arrive first though as I have syncro parts from 3 countries floating somewhere in the ocean towards oz though I hadn't thought to pack a wheel carrier in with the transaxles.

over here there have never been alloy bull bars with official
recognition at all. The only bul bar that might have been worth to be
used as such would be something like in the picture i have attached.
Manufactured by a small company in germany, which is dead by now.
These bullbar where made from steel and came with official papers.
Nowawadays every technical inspector developed a strange allergy
against bullbars so even those old ones with papers will pose a
problem. Self-manufactured variants will only generate a smile on his
face while he kicks you out of the office :))
I did have the Budich Paris Dakar II - the one shown in the picture -
but decided to get rid of it due to more useless 40kg weight on the
front axle and drastically decreased approach angle. I have never
measured it, but the picture tells the story.
