Wheels/Tyres

Les
Yes that was my opinion too however i was not that direct.
Just thought i would bring it up in case someone else had those C S A mags and had not noticed the issue.
I believe it would be the case on every Tracker on the road in Aus. Sobering thought?
I might advise Trakka and see what they say ??

Basicly there is approx 2 threads into the hex past the washer max.

Regards Pete

Hi Ken ,
What would make the imported BFG illegal

Australian approval may or may not be on them.

I have redrilled wheels and installed inserts in the lugholes. Said inserts are the similar to the ones found on MB "Bundcake" style wheels. You can view how these inserts look like in my old 'How-to' webpage. It's at the very bottom of the various articles (#5).

http://sites.google.com/site/vanagoncafe/vanagon-cafe-how-to-page

The inserts are essentially steel washers with fluted edges which are designed to bite into the sides of the hole drilled specifically for it. They serve to reinforce the opening and eliminate damage by steel lugnuts against the aluminium surface of the wheels.

Sorry, I left off a paragraph!

The studs shown in the picture are too short to allow for taper seat nuts.   A minimum of 1.5D engagement is desirable.

The two available alternatives are:

  1. replace the studs
  2. re-machine the wheel deeper if it is safe to do so.

Pete,

I have received the pictures.

That arrangement is outright criminal.

There is a snap through point immediately at the bottom of the flange or washer – can’t tell which it is – that tempts fate very seriously.   It’s one of these things that might remain intact for a lifetime and it might give way tomorrow.

In motor vehicle design, much care is taken to ensure that all vital parts are inherently safe; one always errs on the safe side.   This is inherently unsafe as opposed to inherently safe.

There is presumably nothing wrong with the wheels but there is everything wrong with the fastening arrangement.  The only safe path is to switch to taper nuts and re-engineer the wheels accordingly.  I cannot tell from the pictures (very out of focus) if there are thread inserts in the wheel or not and this dictates what can be done to the wheel.

If they are inserts, it needs to be determined if they are big enough to accept a taper for tapered seat wheel nuts.   If they aren’t big enough, it would need new and bigger inserts.

Hi all,

Am in Perth and want to purchase 15 inch rims for my 1991 2.1 Syncro to use with 215/70R/15 tyres (are they the correct size)

Any suggestions as to what rims will fit and where to purchase

Regards

Philippe
Hi Philippe,

speak to Patrick at Mosman Park Auto.
He'll point you in the right direction and is the mechanic to know re syncros in Perth. I run Mercedes rims that Patrick sourced.

If you're down Fremantle way let me know and we can swap syncro stories.
