Which driveshaft decoupler?

Which decoupler should I choose, the German of South African/US design.
So far I have seen the Gowesty (US?) & Syncro Services (German)

Is there much to choose?
The Gowesty offer looks good & is a little cheaper than the Syncro Services.

Any thoughts?

Bruce.
Bruce, They are such a simple, well tested unit that I don't think any brand will give you trouble. For me the German/SS design is the best. Florian who used to post on here regularly is the best source of that type of decoupler. This is his site.
So essentially you get the German product with the ease of American shipping. Greg E

Hi Bruce,
A number of forum members in the past have purchased their decoupler kit from:
For Australian buyers, the kit is split into two parcels to enable declared total valuation on each of less than $1000, so no additional entry tax on entry.

I see by comparison though nowadays, GoWesty's current decoupler is more affordable. How it compares design/usage wise I have no idea. If anyone has bought and fitted one, it'd be useful to provide a review here of their supply and usage experiences with it.

Cheers.
Ken

I purchased mine from van cafe no problems with delivery, I rarely use it in the city unless there is heavy rain, unit operates perfectly when required, noticed some change in the steering dynamics.

Do you intend to install it yourself if not obtain a price from the Muller boys to Supply and install as it will save you the postal charges for the nose cone delivery to the states, Steve Muller charged me app $900-00 to install the unit but there were a couple of items included repair diff lock switch and additional hose for the decoupler  as the hose supplied was to short, he also lent me a spare nose cone he had which I sent to the states as a swap unit he took the nose cone on mine when he installed the unit, this you allows to keep using your vehicle whilst waiting for the decoupler’ I know that Paul Muller has decouplers in stock also.

New subject  Tyres

I am about to get new tyres for the DOKA  I have been using BF Goodrich all terrains so far would any members care to toss there two bobs worth in regards to what they use and their opinion oh them.

Thanks Greg, Ken, Hamish & Robert for your comprehensive feedback!
I am in Adelaide, so will probably want to install it myself. On the other hand, We will be taking the Syncro to Bowral in early August to visit relatives & pick up a nice set of 4 Tiguan wheels I picked up on Gumtree.

Also I have been talking to Alan at AM Auto in Noosaville about fitting a Subie EJ 25 using the whole Smallcar kit. He can do it within 5 days once the kit and motor are in hand. In addition, I will be having a trans rebuild with 1.08 3rd & 0.7 4th at some point. Any recommendations on trans rebuild?

Need to coordinate all this somehow.

Hamish and all,
Interesting set of pics ... there seems to be a larger range of designs than I ever thought.
As a rough rule of thumb, it's usually been accepted the original German design is best, whether the US ones have caught up or are better, I have no idea either way.

Bare in mind many of us on here bought German decouplers that at the time cost $2500 supply only. So current pricing of US$795 - US$995 supply only is a steal by comparison.

Here's an install procedure that may be of interest:

Happy reading!

Park you car on a incline.
That way oil remains in gear box.
It's a easy instal at home your self -  1/2 a Saturday. Just make sure u get the appropriate sealant to seal the housing.

What are you doing about your viscous? If you generally drive on bitumen but when off road you like going hard core then I suggest u install a solid shaft up front.

My viscous was slipping so I removed it while leaving the diff in the car and I washed away the silicon fluid and I then  refilled it with fibreglass resin. And reinstalled in the car.

It's lasted me +10 years and prob cost me a days work to do.

I've since got a solid shaft but never installed it yet.... Maybe one day.

What tyre diameter and diff ratios are you running.

0.7 sounds too tall a ratio.

Even with my 720 mm Od tyres and my 6.17 rnp change and running a taller 0.78  4th grear on my 2.4 I'm considering only going to 0.75 forth from albins even when I install my r32 vr6 with loads more torque.

I'm guessing u have the original 14 in Syncro rnp which is 5.4somthing  so a .07 would be even taller.

Have you tried using Derek drews gear calculator?

Agreed Hamish. Need to stay close to original overall gearing. Got 740 dia tyres on mine with a. 93 ratio top gear. My 2 cents worth, Eddie

Bruce,5 days!Thats amazing. He must have a full crew on the job.I knew I was slow but...now I know why I am out of the trade. It takes a couple of days to strip and organize the loom.
You need more than what is supplied by SC in their "kit".Do more research.
As far as trans rebuilds try Racetrans in Kempsey. Many here will agree.

Eddie, Hamish,
I will be leaving the VC in for now. It is a bit tight, though I can still do the proverbial U turn in the street without dragging.

I have done a lot of work on gearing & I know all the formulas. Yes I have seen Derek Drew's gear calculator. I don't use it, or any of the others.
I will be using 225/75R16 tyres (OD 244-246 depending on brand) on Tiguan rims. Similar OD to30x9.5R15
My diffs are standard Aus Syncro with the 6PA box  ie. 38/7 or 5.42857. With these tyres & standard gearing in 4th gives about 30.4 kph/1000 rpm or close to 3300 at 100kph. By the way this is like 4th in a Liberty or Forestor. An Outback is similar in weight to a syncro. A 0.7 4th gives 37 kph/100 rpm. Revs at 100 kph then drop to 2700. This I like for highway touring! All other gearing will remain standard for offroad.  Remember there will be an EJ25 driving this. Totally different proposition to the tired old Wasserboxer, even a 2.4. I haven't made a final decision about 3rd & 4th gearing however.

It's good to hear others experiences on the forum.

Bruce.

Ben,
That's what Al said. Igot him to repeat it a couple of times, just to make sure I heard him right the first time!
AM will use the kit plus alloy sump, Subie flywheel, clutch & starter motor & all other necessary bits. Sounds like they are getting pretty good at the Subie transplant. I will plan the whole process with them when the time comes. They don't use the Smallcar rewiring instructions. As Al said the AUS Subies use different ECU's to those in the US due to the different regs. They do rewiring inhouse. Their last job cost the customer $10,500 drive in drive out.
Thanks for the tip on transmissions. Al uses Dave Butler on the Gold Coast. Anyone know him?
I have am interested in your journey with your Subie engine. Highs, lows, problems? What about gearing?

Cheers,

Bruce.

Bruce,

I just had my gearbox rebuilt by Ronnie Schmidt and he was great - does it for fun as much as some extra retirement funds but knows his stuff.

He did a rebuild for a bloke just up the coast from me in Toukley area (wasn't sure of his name) due to a failure of the main shaft and as a request he put in a taller 4th gear with a 0.71 ratio.

He said it is great for flat cruising but hills are a problem - he must change down to 3rd.

Not sure what donk he had but it wasnt standard.

Otherwise the box was rebuilt with standard ratios.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks Skot.
Third will be 1.08 which gives me 24 kph/1000 rpm This will allow me to drop to 3rd on steep slopes, maintaining 80kph at 3300 rpm, a doddle for the Subie engine.

By the way, AM Autos are currently doing a quote for an EJ25 into a T3 Syncro. Anyone we know? (Anyone?)

Cheers, Bruce.

Bruce,

They are like bums these days - everyone has one (or is planning one).

Best of luck with yours.

Cheers,

Thanks Skot.
Third will be 1.08 which gives me 24 kph/1000 rpm This will allow me to drop to 3rd on steep slopes, maintaining 80kph at 3300 rpm, a doddle for the Subie engine.

By the way, AM Autos are currently doing a quote for an EJ25 into a T3 Syncro. Anyone we know? (Anyone?)

Cheers, Bruce.

Yes Bruce,

Two total diasters there.

There was quite a few E82 suby conversions in bay window kombis too.

Cheers,

Skot
