Ben,
That's what Al said. Igot him to repeat it a couple of times, just to make sure I heard him right the first time!
AM will use the kit plus alloy sump, Subie flywheel, clutch & starter motor & all other necessary bits. Sounds like they are getting pretty good at the Subie transplant. I will plan the whole process with them when the time comes. They don't use the Smallcar rewiring instructions. As Al said the AUS Subies use different ECU's to those in the US due to the different regs. They do rewiring inhouse. Their last job cost the customer $10,500 drive in drive out.
Thanks for the tip on transmissions. Al uses Dave Butler on the Gold Coast. Anyone know him?
I have am interested in your journey with your Subie engine. Highs, lows, problems? What about gearing?

Cheers,

Bruce.

The add says it is all controlled by a Haltech Computer.

That apparently is illegal in NSW now - you must use the factory computer.

Maybe different rules where he lives?

By the way this is like 4th in a Liberty or Forestor. An Outback is similar in weight to a syncro. A 0.7 4th gives 37 kph/100 rpm. Revs at 100 kph then drop to 2700. This I like for highway touring! All other gearing will remain standard for offroad.  Remember there will be an EJ25 driving this. Totally different proposition to the tired old Wasserboxer, even a 2.4. I haven't made a final decision about 3rd & 4th gearing however.

Bruce,Dave Butler is a very reliable source.
As far as my journey,I did 2 years research before I bought a thing.
I then purchased everything that I required,then I started.
It took me about 2 weeks,in a workshop with a hoist.I am very anal.
I believe my conversion is a very professional factory conversion.
I really had no issues when I did the conversion,it all fell into place well.
The only thing I would do now if I was to do it again would be pull the heads of the ej and do the head gaskets whilst the engine is on a stand. They have a history of leaking oil.
I didnt like the SC bellhousing as it has an internal Golf slave cylinder, other than that I think they(RJES and SC) are much the same.
I used a lot of SC gear.Engine carrier, sump, exhaust etc, whilst I used RJES for the bellhousing, reverse coolant manifold, moulded hose kit,VSS and Richard did my loom after I stripped and sent it over.
It started first kick it was awesome!
I havent had any problems(over 40000ks) and I can still be seen smiling my head off as I overtake up hill in top gear.
I have just recently had my ring and pinion and pinion bearing replaced,it was 10 years ago since that was done with the previous owner.
Do a search amongst the forum,I did extensive posts on the conversion when I did it,also check out the photos in the photo section.
Good luck! You will love it.PM or call me if you like.

As regards tyres/ratios etc...

My setup in 2003 (when travelling Australia) was

225/75/16 on T4 rims
4.86 ratio
3.78 first
1.88 second
1,23 third
0.85 forth
2.1 MV engine
VC

-> handled my 2050 kg (empty) beast at 95 km/h in the Nullarbor Plain when having strong head winds. Could easily do 105-110 km/h without any winds. Did not have enough power to climb very soft sand dunes in first gear and could not do beach driving in soft/dry sand in second.

Later, setup changed to

5.43 ratio
2.06 second
0.78 forth
decoupler and solid shaft

-> which improved acceleration a lot, especially in second gear. However, no offroad experience with it. Needed to downshift into third a lot when going uphill.

Ever later, only recently actually, setup changed to

EJ25

-> acceleration amazes and sometimes even shocks people driving the now 2300 kg (empty) beast. No offroad experience with it either. Do not need to downshift that much any more. Does around 3,500 rpm at 105 km/h which is nice. However, I sometimes still think the fourth gear could be a little bit shorter.

By the way: 10 liters when going 95 km/h and 13 liters when going 105 km/h on the motorway, 14.5 (and more) on rural roads, depending on my patience ;)

Hi Bruce,

A couple of points re the EJ25 -

1. I found with mine, the standard ratios and 215 X 75R15 tyres gave a good balance between power and economy in 4th, but this was with loads and towing a camper trailer sometimes. However I would be wary of overgearing - the Subi loves to rev!

2. Partly because of the towing, but also because of the extra power of the Subi, I found the gearbox suffered when the decoupler put all the load on the rear wheels, so Rudi put the oiling plates and the extra spider gears in mine when he rebuilt it, suggesting I leave it in 4WD when towing.

Anyway I am sure you will notice the difference when it is all installed, good luck!

I didn't know Richard from rjes did wiring mods- wow!

He was a very helpful guy to me when I fitted a Subaru ez30r to a 1981 2wd gear box. In that install I used the 240mm sti flywheel and pull to release clutch and I did have clearance issues in the bell housing of which has been fixed in later bell housing models from Richard.

Sun spares offer used ej2.5s and looms with replaced head gaskets for 3.5k.
Interesting also newish boxer diesels to for 5k for those who are game.

Bob - I think I've seen your old intermediate housing at rudi's- did you previously suffer from a main shaft bearing failure?

Rudi showed me one and the outer race cracked do to the high axial load it was subjected to.

After seeing that and in planning my next gear box build I have sourced a thrust plate that is 0.9mm thick that requires the end housing to be milled by 0.9mm and then the steel plate is inserted between the housings and forms a greater harder surface for which the main shaft thrust and or tilts against.

Such plates were commonly used in 2wd beetle / kombi off road and drag racing scenes a long time ago.

I'm also going to install a gear box oil pump cooler and return directly onto ring and pinion to keep the gear box oil temp down and increase its capacity.

Bruce, one thing I forgot to mention.Fit a stage 2 Subaru pressure plate. The standard one gives a very soft pedal.

Yes Hamish,

the mainshaft bearing was totally cactus and I had seen the steel thrust plate on overseas forums, but Rudi thought I could manage with the superbox and using 4WD for towing.

But of course think the route you are going is the best answer for a longer life of our already stressed transmissions with bigger tyres / wheels, let alone many more horses.

Where are you getting the thrust plate and is Rudi going to put the mods in? - he seemed a bit reluctant when I had mine done.

I purchased two 1 for rudi and 1 for me,

If its not original then rudi doesn't like it .... But as our kombis are a dieing breed I guess he's starting to open up a little to keep them up n going.

I saw a few of Ronnie Schmidt's thrust plates in his many off-road VW boxes.

He uses this in all his race ones to strengthen them up.

I am sure he could source something for you if Rudi cant.

Hi all,

Just found this tyre size comparison between the 235 x 75 x 15 tyres
(which I have) compared to the 30 x 9.5 x 15 tyres I noticed Paul has on
his syncro.

They look the same size but clearly there is a bit of difference -
particularly the side walls.

http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php?tires=235-75r15-30-9.5r15

Very interesting the minor differences and what it means in relation to
the speedo readings.

Cheers,

Skot
Thanks Ben,for telling me your story.
Interesting your point about the internal clutch slave cylinder on the SC bellhousing. I will follow that up with Al at AM.
Clearly you're more capable on the spanners than me. I thought about doing it myself but would probably take me months & I don't really have the space. I'll leave it to the pros.
We will be in Bowral early August.
Cheers,
Bruce.
