You, me, & a few dozen others I know. I've even asked Herman. He said
something like maybe once his project is done. I suspect that is his
polite way of saying 'no'.

I believe, that was posted earlier. There are a couple of minor errors
re: clearance and spacers. That's David Marshall's site. He didn't
pioneer the modification but he popularize it in the English Language
Syncro forums.

That website predates Herman's blog by years. Just like my rear disc
project predated the Small Car kit by about a decade. SC brought the
system to people who would otherwise just dreamt about it. Now Burleysmotorsports.com
is making the caliper mounts and providing services to cut the rear
hubs.

Don't let anyone tell you drum brakes are then only way to get good
braking in the rear. Once upon a time, I discovered what happens when
you put too much braking in the back. Syncro swapped ends on the test
drive.;-)

I don't mean to downplay Herman's accomplishments but there a few other equally if not more talented Syncronauts out here. Sadly, none as talented at writing blogs as Herman.

Remember the thread about freewheeling hubs? I have seen Jack's highly modified Syncro in person. Longer wheelbase, aforementioned hubs, decoupler, big brakes, TDi, special bumpers, revised arches... too much to list as they say.

Alf,

It's the talk on the US Syncro forums that the rear disc from the T4's aren't up to the task of holding a heavy Syncro of steep grades vs. stock drum brakes.

Please post P/N if you can so I can crossreference with other VW models. I suspect they can come Passat's and such as well.

Winkler were selling SA parts as performance upgrades. I would not be surprised to discover that Oettinger did something similar. Companies such as Hansen sold Porsche 'big red' brakes adapted to T3's as well.

Oettinger did, mine has front and rear. i am not sure but paul muller was trying to convert the rear brakes on his dual cab so he took one of the roters to DBA aust to by some but they told him that it was not in their catalouqe and he stated that he Oettinger no longer supplied them, going to be interisting if i have to replace the rotors quess i will have to cross that bridge later

Group, picked up my big BMW e30 booster today, and are looking into all options for bigger brakes on the front.Does anyone know if/or it is possible to convert T4 drums onto T3?

Surely you mean T4 rear drums, right?Since most of the stopping duties
are done by the front brakes, it does not seem cost effective to do
anything with the rears. Besides a using a good quality rear brake
shoe, I would get the shoes arched to match the drums. I have found
that to be more than adequate for normal driving conditions.

Sorry, I have no experience with T4 drums. Coincidentally, I was at my
friend's shop yesterday and just came to the realization that some T4
models still ran with rear drums. From what I saw, they are larger
than T3 drums. Remember that T4's are FWD. There will likely be
differences in the hub section. I would imagine putting these drums on
a T3 would require adapting the backing plates which had ABS hubs
protruding on the backside. Too much work for little gain in my opinion.

Cheers,
