NSW Rip Off

To anyone interested, Chris Band from Camperize usually goes to the Nationals.

You would have saved much more on CTP to register it as a camper.

Just a quick update on seatbelts to complete the picture. On purchase I found a strange bar under the back seat and could not work it out. Then when Hart was going over his new acquisition he suddenly realised it was the bar that bolts on to the passenger side across the rear window for a sash seat belt to be affixed. When installed I will have a three seater with only one “illegal” lap belt. I will attach it next year when I go for a pink slip.

See you on Sunday, Peter

Peter,
Phill will know for sure, anyway I have the impression this particular bar may be peculiar to Oz T3's only.
In the past, there have been enquiries here seeking to obtain this bar, so looks like you've fallen on your feet with this.
Cheers.
Ken

If I had to go down the full certificate path, I wonder if it would have passed current standards. I might drop in ask my mechanic.

Cheers, Peter

Peter,

Here's the camper to die for and no sheep dip gate either. A shame about the LHD.

Peter,

In general, an old vehicle which is being registered or re-registered has to comply with the ADR requirements of the time that the vehicle was first registered or manufactured, not with the current ADRs.  (A 1989 Syncro would not have to comply with 2010 ADRs.)  Structural integrity requirements are independent of the ADRs and it is unlikely that a camper conversion that was originally built in 1989 would not be accepted in 2010.

The matter of seats and belts comes under the year of registration/manufacture rule.  A 1989 Syncro has to comply with the ADRs of 1989.

Les

Peter,

My rear bed/seat was done by the same people "Camperize" and I have the same bar fitted which allows for the 3 point system. Luckily mine was approved before they stopped allowing lap only belts and hence I still have an "approved" 5 seater.

Cheers,

Mark,
A few queries leading up to next Sunday ... The Nationals.

How many "recognised" T3 camper conversion manufacturers were there? Trakka, Camperize, Suncamper and ????
The opportunity presents on Sunday to scout around and find them, both in the undercover and outside carparks?
Perhaps a couple of camera guys during the day to take pertinent photos of T3 campervans/conversion permit stickers?
A "delegation" to brainstorm with Chris Band on the day? He may know all about his opposition builders as well?
Are Trakka or any others represented there on the day?

Hi Doone

Any idea why there are 2 numbers or what they may relate to?

Can you send a external & interior picture of your Camperise conversion? In fact, perhaps a picture of the sticker as well.

I think mine was done by Camperise, however, as you know for sure, it would be good to compare the style of conversion (ie, roof type moudling, interior layout)

If you coming to Nationals then can take a look there.

Ken - it may be important to know _who_ did the conversion as well in the absence of the sticker, in order to then further identify which approval number is appropriate.

Thanks
Mark.

Hi Hart,

Looking through the history of my Trakka it was actually traded in and re-sold at Safari Campers (in Adelaide I believe) in about 96. I actually have a “Safari Campers” key ring. I can check the address and location when I get home tonight if you would like?

Kind Regards

Murray

Hart,

From what I am aware, Camperize were bought out and the name changed to Discoverer Campers with "Safari" conversion models. Later Discoverer dropped the Safari and just called them Discoverer conversions.

Hence, Camperize, Safari and Discoverer are all the same basic design and the fibreglass roof was design by a guy named Richard ........ who died only a few years ago.

The Camperize/ Discoverer/Safari T3 roof mould now lives on and is currently Owned by a mob called "Nose Cone" who are based in 12 Donald St, Old Guilford.

They now even have correct spec of how to "lay up" the roof in the mould to make sure it doesn't sag.

I even have a 10 year old brochure of the discoverer / safari conversion to a T3 with a very nice 87 model twin diff-lock vehicle as the show piece.

I will try and dig it up and bring it to the Nationals.

Cheers,

Scott

Hartmut,
Yeah well I think you'll find that roobar was made out of leftover over spec reinforcing steel from the huge upgrade roadworks they did on Old Pittwater Rd back in ..... uummmm .... around 1975 I think from memory.

Be a metal recyclers dream come true to get their mittens on that roo bar now .....

Hi Hart,

Looking through the history of my Trakka it was actually traded in and re-sold at Safari Campers (in Adelaide I believe) in about 96. I actually have a “Safari Campers” key ring. I can check the address and location when I get home tonight if you would like?

Kind Regards

A few queries leading up to next Sunday ... The Nationals.

How many "recognised" T3 camper conversion manufacturers were there? Trakka, Camperize, Suncamper and ????
The opportunity presents on Sunday to scout around and find them, both in the undercover and outside carparks?
Perhaps a couple of camera guys during the day to take pertinent photos of T3 campervans/conversi on permit stickers?

Thanks
Mark.

Very interesting Scott, I knew Richard very well  , been to their workshop a fair few times as they were ‘round the corner from Exclusive Slate our bus in 89 when Richard bought my then New Syncro .

Ciao Hart   PS  there must be at least 2 roof moulds, my Discoverer has amore ‘slant’ front section whilst Peter’s  is more ‘bread box ‘style which suits the vehicle much better.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Hart,

Looking through the history of my Trakka it was actually traded in and re-sold at Safari Campers (in Adelaide I believe) in about 96. I actually have a “Safari Campers” key ring. I can check the address and location when I get home tonight if you would like?

Kind Regards

Murray

Mark,
A few queries leading up to next Sunday ...

Thanks
Mark.

Phill and All,
Ok thanks, so now, can those with any known brand T3 campervan conversion please check your own original documentation and/or sticker for reference to their own specific RTA issued T3 conversion builder permit/licence number & report here your findings?

By so doing it's possible we may in fact uncover a commonality of permit/licence number issued to each builder of T3 camper conversions. This information may well assist present and future owners of these campervans when dealing with the likes of the RTA.

TIA. Cheers.
Ken

You can also add Sunliner. I'm not sure how many Syncro camper conversions they did. Ours might be unique in Australia, for all I know. Haven't looked for a sticker yet. I'm wondering about the legality of our seatbelts now, with one lap-sash and one lap belt in the back. Rego sticker claims licensed to carry only 2 passengers..

I think you will find they are in W.A. Mine was converted there, it is like an uglier, taller, squarer version of the westy roof. I think they also did one that was like the trakka roof but did not involve removing the front roof spar. Greg E
