NSW Rip Off

Hartmut,
hhmmmmmmmm   .... on a full lock, it'd be interesting to learn how much larger the turning circle is with the sheep dip gate on. Meaning what might get hit when on compared to what you'd miss with it off.

Heh there'll be a squillion dollars worth of closely packed and highly polished VeeDub metal you can test this next Sunday ok.

Kenny,

I put the roo thing onto the scales, it weighs in at 14kg 450gr or for you 14.45 kg. And that incl. the licence plate as well as 3 Roo Freak Whistles, wouldn’t make a scappies day, so I will put it back on now.  Hart

Hartmut,
Yeah well I think you'll find that roobar was made out of leftover over spec reinforcing steel from the huge upgrade roadworks they did on Old Pittwater Rd back in ..... uummmm .... around 1975 I think from memory.

Be a metal recyclers dream come true to get their mittens on that roo bar now .....

Mark,
A few queries leading up to next Sunday ... The Nationals.

How many "recognised" T3 camper conversion manufacturers were there? Trakka, Camperize, Suncamper and ????
The opportunity presents on Sunday to scout around and find them, both in the undercover and outside carparks?
Perhaps a couple of camera guys during the day to take pertinent photos of T3 campervans/conversi on permit stickers?
A "delegation" to brainstorm with Chris Band on the day? He may know all about his opposition builders as well?
Are Trakka or any others represented there on the day?

Hi Doone

Any idea why there are 2 numbers or what they may relate to?

Can you send a external & interior picture of your Camperise conversion? In fact, perhaps a picture of the sticker as well.

I think mine was done by Camperise, however, as you know for sure, it would be good to compare the style of conversion (ie, roof type moudling, interior layout)

If you coming to Nationals then can take a look there.

Ken - it may be important to know _who_ did the conversion as well in the absence of the sticker, in order to then further identify which approval number is appropriate.

Thanks
Mark.

Francesca,

To reiterate then, as I understand it, at least in NSW, there won't be any reference nor alteration of details to a vehicles registration certificate, rego sticker nor affixed vehicle compliance plate as a consequence of a subsequent camper conversion. The conversion approval is merely covered under the terms of the conversion builders permit issued to them by the RTA (or DMT back then) and the RTA remains cognisant of that issued permit (we hope). The wheels rapidly fall off if they aren't.

Interesting though it is now revealed that the Trakka permit plate also inscribes the particular vehicles VIN.

So my camper is similarly equipped as yours except with instead a Trakka (I assume) installed lap-sash and one lap belt in the back and my compliance plate remains showing an all up 2 passenger limit. Though interestingly my rear lap-sash belt doesn't have the window bar fixture as others do have. Are other Trakka setups the same as mine with no window bar fixture?

Of course, one still wonders whether or not all conversion work done and perhaps altered again/added to over the years by subsequent owners is legal under which, if any, RTA issued permit or verified approval. Could get messy here.

Bottom line is .... if in doubt, it is prudent to avoid circumstances that might otherwise lead to a blue slip or engineering inspection.

Failing all that, whenever push comes to shove, owners ideally need to have on hand the right information so an RTA inspector can be led by the hand to a favourable/logical outcome. That's the testy bit. I believe we've all come some way to a better understanding thanks to Peters persistence.

Cheers.

Ken

I'm wondering about the legality of our seatbelts now, with one lap-sash and one lap belt in the back. Rego sticker claims licensed to carry only 2 passengers..

Looking through the history of my Trakka it was actually traded in and re-sold at Safari Campers (in Adelaide I believe) in about 96. I actually have a “Safari Campers” key ring. I can check the address and location when I get home tonight if you would like?

Hi Mark,
I don't know why there are two numbers, maybe some of the conversion was by one fitter and the rest was by the other. I have a popup roof, three seat belt back seat which folds down to a bed. In front of the bed is a sink and cupboard behind the drivers seat. The stove is on a swing out removable unit behind the passenger seat. Sorry no pictures.
Cheers

All this talk of converion companies has got me researching my own. So Murray was right Safari are in S.A. sorry Murray. The reason I thought they were in W.A. is that our syncro was converted prior to sale in W.A. An old sticker on the front of the pop top says "A CAMPERWORLD SAFARI CONVERSION PERTH WA". So does that mean the conversion was done under licence in wa or was the car shipped to sa? Now I am confused. Greg E

RHD syncro Kombi built in Oct '88 ('89 model)
Pastel White with beige/brown upholstery.
Rear diff lock
205 tyres under front spare
Power steer
No vehicle ID plate
Australian version
Rectangular headlights
Les,

I have my original rego papers also and mine is a 284.
My Tare wt is 1430
My Agg wt is 2625

I also have the DOTFORS NVD1 document dated 10/89. It lists 2 body codes, 284 and 232. Any idea what the 232 is?

It lists tyres as 185 as standard and 205 on 6" rims as optional.

The FORS documented Tare wt is 1430
The FORS documented Agg wt is 2625

Hi Ken. My old T3 which I hope is now happily enjoying life with it’s new owner had a sash belt but not the bar like my Syncro. As a result the sash was a little bit lower where it went over the shoulder. It was just fixed in the same position as the rear mounting bolt of the bar.

Peter

PS. My new OME shocks are fantastic. Much improved drive now. Worth the $800.

Yep. That is a good description. A "Z" bar. It makes for a much higher sash
across the shoulders unless you are 6 ft 2 in like me!!!!

Peter
Yes it is not legal to have seat belts in the back without them.

Hi Doone

The question may have been answered yesterday - the 2 numbers - 1 for the roof conversion and 1 number for the rest as they were completed by 2 different (albeit adjacent) companies.

Mark.

Hi Mark,
I don't know why there are two numbers, maybe some of the conversion was by one fitter and the rest was by the other. I have a popup roof, three seat belt back seat which folds down to a bed. In front of the bed is a sink and cupboard behind the drivers seat. The stove is on a swing out removable unit behind the passenger seat. Sorry no pictures.

Hi Scott

Would be great if you can bring this brochure with you.

That's very interesting that Nose Cone now have that mould for the T3. Do you know if someone could take their tin-top T3 and have it installed there also?

The Camperize/ Discoverer/Safari T3 roof mould now lives on and is currently Owned by a mob called "Nose Cone" who are based in 12 Donald St, Old Guilford.
They now even have correct spec of how to "lay up" the roof in the mould to make sure it doesn't sag.
I even have a 10 year old brochure of the discoverer / safari conversion to a T3 with a very nice 87 model twin diff-lock vehicle as the show piece.
I will try and dig it up and bring it to the Nationals.

A few queries leading up to next Sunday ... The Nationals.

How many "recognised" T3 camper conversion manufacturers were there? Trakka, Camperize, Suncamper and ????
The opportunity presents on Sunday to scout around and find them, both in the undercover and outside carparks?
Perhaps a couple of camera guys during the day to take pertinent photos of T3 campervans/conversion permit stickers?
A "delegation" to brainstorm with Chris Band on the day? He may know all about his opposition builders as well?
Are Trakka or any others represented there on the day?
