NSW Rip Off

Interesting.

Brett from Macron thought it would be fairly easy to do with an engineers certificate and a blue slip.

I will give it a try and let you know.

It will cost me the same for the engineers certificate and blue slip anyway regardless of whether they let me do it.

The RTA are a very strange lot and the only thing you can predict with them is that they will be a pain in the arse.

See you @ the Nationals.

Cheers,

Scott

Good luck! I tried to do that many years ago. The computer program would not allow it. Once the VIN is entered as a goods vehicle it could not be changed. I even spoke to the RTA about de-registering it and re-registering it as a passenger vehicle and they could only guarantee that it would cost me a lot of money and did not know what the outcome would be.

Would he know?
Note that the camper in the brochure is Richard's Camperize conversion which he owned when he was at Brookvale.

He organises vehicles to do this very regularly. The last one he did he had difficulty with because it needed to be registered in the ACT - they have their own version of the RTA.

He also mentioned that apparently ADR standards apply which are a national standard but only to new vehicles prior to registration. Once registered you are at the mercy of the RTA.

Yes, but only the customer would know the end result.

That's BS. (Les has already gone into detail with this)

What do you need a certificate for Scott?
Insurance reasons mainly.

I have no intention of selling that's for sure.

Scott, any idea what sort of cost is involved?

I'm trying to decide what to do with my roof. It is a conversion common in the UK (Autohomes) but not here obviously and it works well but it is very heavy and needs a bit of love.

A nice new one might be the answer! I was toying with importing one of the justkampers Westie replicas but local would be better.

Gary,

You would need to budget around $3500 to have the pop-top made by Nose Cone then probably around the same to have it fitted, a new headliner, new pop-top sleeve, new X-arms (the X arms are $350 for a set) plus around $600.00 for engineer certification/ blue slip if you want to do that part.If you want it painted to match your vehicle add around $900.00 to the bill.

I made my own boards, but Brett from Macron is going to cut them down slightly to all fit in the parcel shelf at the back of the pop top so they are out of the way whilst travelling. Hence he is going to re-cover them.

I did a lot of shopping around for camper converters when Discoverer went belly up and Brett was the only one that had the experience and general know how to do the job. I didn't care about the fact he was on the Central Coast - my initial searches started in Sydney as my replacement roof was already made by Nose Cone in Sydney and I didn't really want to drive the newly painted roof up the freeway unless it was attached to my syncro.

I decided to hire one of these self drive removalist trucks for $100/day and drove that down, picked up the roof and drove it up to Macron. That worked out well as the painted roof was safely stored on a timber cradle I made in the back.

Let me know if you want any more details.

Cheers,

Scott

Can you send a external & interior picture of your Camperise conversion? In fact, perhaps a picture of the sticker as well.

I think mine was done by Camperise, however, as you know for sure, it would be good to compare the style of conversion (ie, roof type moudling, interior layout)

If you coming to Nationals then can take a look there.

Ken - it may be important to know _who_ did the conversion as well in the absence of the sticker, in order to then further identify which approval number is appropriate.

Thanks

Cheers,

Scott

Scott, any idea what sort of cost is involved?

I'm trying to decide what to do with my roof. It is a conversion common in the UK (Autohomes) but not here obviously and it works well but it is very heavy and needs a bit of love.

A nice new one might be the answer! I was toying with importing one of the justkampers Westie replicas but local would be better.

Hi Scott

Would be great if you can bring this brochure with you.

That's very interesting that Nose Cone now have that mould for the T3. Do you know if someone could take their tin-top T3 and have it installed there also?

Mark,
A few queries leading up to next Sunday ... The Nationals.

How many "recognised" T3 camper conversion manufacturers were there? Trakka, Camperize, Suncamper and ????
The opportunity presents on Sunday to scout around and find them, both in the undercover and outside carparks?
Perhaps a couple of camera guys during the day to take pertinent photos of T3 campervans/conversi on permit stickers?
A "delegation" to brainstorm with Chris Band on the day? He may know all about his opposition builders as well?
Are Trakka or any others represented there on the day?

Hi Doone

Any idea why there are 2 numbers or what they may relate to?

Can you send a external & interior picture of your Camperise conversion? In fact, perhaps a picture of the sticker as well.

I think mine was done by Camperise, however, as you know for sure, it would be good to compare the style of conversion (ie, roof type moudling, interior layout)

If you coming to Nationals then can take a look there.

Ken - it may be important to know _who_ did the conversion as well in the absence of the sticker, in order to then further identify which approval number is appropriate.

Thanks
Mark.

Gary,

I was looking at second hand ones from Australia as well but there are just none available and if they are - they are usually damaged.

A trakka roof was not an option for me either as I didn't want to cut the front safety cell out.

When the opportunity arose - I jumped - its been a long battle for me - 18 months now and 3 conversion companies later its finally done.

My eldest daughter loves it and actually wants to come away camping now.

You kind of feel safer with them up in the roof as the dingoes/ crocs cant get them!

Cheers,

Scott

The other reason I wanted a Discoverer roof is the design - it is very curvy and reduces the boxy look of the T3 somewhat - plus it keeps the front safety cell.

The suncamper roof is also a very nice design and keeps the front cell intact. There seems to be less of them around though.

The roof on mine is actually massive when up and my boys 5&3 both love it also when they are not fighting up there but it has been neglected in its life so a nice new one would be good.

Cheers,

I'm trying to decide what to do with my roof. It is a conversion common in the UK (Autohomes) but not here obviously and it works well but it is very heavy and needs a bit of love.

A nice new one might be the answer! I was toying with importing one of the justkampers Westie replicas but local would be better.

That's very interesting that Nose Cone now have that mould for the T3. Do you know if someone could take their tin-top T3 and have it installed there also?

Thanks
Mark.

By so doing it's possible we may in fact uncover a commonality of permit/licence number issued to each builder of T3 camper conversions. This information may well assist present and future owners of these campervans when dealing with the likes of the RTA.

Hi Scott.

When I manage to get my beast up and running and in a reliable manner, I too would like to consider putting in a pop top for my tinny roof.  Like the decoupler group buy, i wonder if Nose Cone and then Macron might consider a group buy if enough members applied for the work at the same time. $7000 is a fair outgoing for a 20 odd year work van when alls said and done.

I agree Michael.

You really need to want the pop top to do it but it provides many benefits for the dollars required. You also need to plan to keep the vehicle for some time to benefit from the work.

Very nice to be able to easily stand in the vehicle to get changed and my daughter absolutely loves the roof bed. Now we have rid ourselves of those nasty boxy fluoro lights and have a very slim line LED strip light - there will be no head banging.

I spoke to Brett about a cab bunk that secures over the head rests and clips onto the grab handles for Child # 2.

When finances permit I will be getting one of those.

Anyway it is comforting to know you at least have this as an option and I would suggest you wont really get any other new pop top installed for any less. It also solved my damaged headliner and scratched / dented roof problems - plus gave Hartmut an O/H air con installation project.

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks
Mark.

My camper conversion was carried out in Brookvale, NSW in 1989 by Camperise Industries and Modular Camping Industries. There are two DMT approvals numbered 83131 and 83137. These are stickers on the wall above the accelerator pedal.

Phill and All,
Ok thanks, so now, can those with any known brand T3 campervan conversion please check your own original documentation and/or sticker for reference to their own specific RTA issued T3 conversion builder permit/licence number & report here your findings?

By so doing it's possible we may in fact uncover a commonality of permit/licence number issued to each builder of T3 camper conversions. This information may well assist present and future owners of these campervans when dealing with the likes of the RTA.

TIA. Cheers.
Ken

Hi Scott,

You might want to look at this http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f26/front-bunk-sling-kombi-beach-t5-33134.html . Made for a T4/5, but could probably be adapted for a T3.

Cheers,

Scott

Guys the only other roof i've found is in the uk

which is actually made by these guys

The Australian site http://www.thebusstop.com.au/

is connected with Just Kampers so could possibly bring one out with a shipment but that may be too expensive. Their costs include 17.5% VAT which you should be able to avoid.

This may all be too hard but I thought I'd throw it in while we are talking pop tops!

Gary

Thanks Brian,

They seem excellent for a T4/ T5, but the T3 sills are fairly narrow and rounded making this system impractical.

I spoke to Nik "Vannin" on the kombi club about this and his system was also well suited to the T4.

Brett's system sounds very suitable to my van and he has made them previously just not for about 15 years.

There is no hurry the next trip camping isn't until Old Bar in October.

Cheers,

Scott
