Hi Scott

The drive is a local scenic - around 3 hours perhaps - leaving around 1pm ish from Old Bar, so you could meet us in Taree. See link below.

We've had a good suggestion about a stop at the Blue Poles Cafe as well. - www.bluepoles.com.au - Hart is possibly familiar with this cafe as well.

Hi Scott

Yes - we just paid at the gate a couple of years ago.

Yes, mid-morning on the Sunday sounds more than reasonable, although there are other groups also trying to be grouped together of course. We snared a spot under one of the few trees, on the basis of having an infant (Max was only 3 months old).

I assume you'll be right for our Saturday afternoon drive?

I have just worked out how to get the posts to come direct to my email - I have been trying to do that for years now since I started my own business and changed my email address. I am hopeless @ logging on so this makes it much easier.

I noticed last year they just marshal you at the order you enter (note where ever you want to park) so we will need to organise a possie in the outer car park just prior to the entry gate.

Maybe a 10:30am meeting prior to entry?

You can pay when you enter there is no need to pre-pay your record attempt fee.

Remember they want as many kombis as they can so they cant be too harsh on pre-registration.

Lets confirm this closer to the date so we don't forget.

Cheers,

Scott

There was a few stray T3 syncros there last year too.

We are staying @ Manning Point caravan park in a cabin as we are still chasing the roof boards from the DFT (supposed to be done shortly) and the local caravan parks cabins were all gone.

Apparently the Owner of the local caravan park is a bit of a Nazi everyone said so be careful. Apparently he doesn't like kombis?

We are only staying Saturday and Sunday nights.

Catch you up there.

Great food, great art, good coffee, fantastic ambience. Well worth the stop.Thoroughly recommend it. Hi Mark,  the route as you sent it to me is correct, but if time permits we should include the ELLENBOROUGH FALLS quite remarkable indeed. But we go with the flow, we can cut out the appendices towards Comboyne, not  much to see there except for the UDDER COW CAFE.

Let me stress that we are not offroading , but going on poor to very poor country roads, in parts very scenic.

I will arrive Friday, and presently trying to get Camp spot       Hartmut

Just booked. You’re apparently on site 11. They said there were no powered sites left close to you, but an unpowered area ‘just over the road’ nearby, so that’s what I’ve booked. I’m expecting to leave Melbourne Thursday evening, stay overnight somewhere like Jugiong, near Yass, and arrive at Old Bar Friday afternoon/evening.

Hi Brian

We are there Friday & Saturday & Sunday night. I'm not sure what site numbers we have or Murray has. Not sure if Murray is Fri night as well, or just Saturday / Sunday night.

Maybe book in at least, and then maybe once we have a number of people confirmed they may be able to co-locate us.

Hart - are you going to stay overnight with us as well?

Regards
Mark.

Hi Murray

Great to hear - are you camping at the Caravan Park at the Airstrip there?

Hart and I have worked out a nice route as well for Saturday afternoon.

Once Hart confirms that what I have mapped in Google Maps is correct then I'll post here for the others who will hopefully join us.

For all you folk travelling to Old Bar via Ellenborough Falls which are terrific, make sure you stop off at Blue Poles Art Gallery Cafe near Comboyne. Great food, great art, good coffee, fantastic ambience. Well worth the stop.Thoroughly recommend it. I agree, the country and the back roads although rough, are far better than travelling along the Pacific Hwy .

Great to hear Graham.

See you at Old Bar.

I heard with the itinery there is a showing of Volka's Vw kombi film which has the infamous Kombis to the Kape in it.

Should be a great watch - I wonder if you can get copies.

By the way there is a mass Kombi convoy on Saturday arvo starting @ Old Bar and doing a small tour for around an hour they say then a BBQ @ the beach then the movie. Sounds like my kind of afternoon.

By the way Mark - I got my struts from Pete Korche @ VW Performance on the Central Coast for $90.00. Perfect fit and easy for me to install (if I can do it - you can!). I will show you @ Old Bar.

Cheers,

Hi Murray

Great to hear - are you camping at the Caravan Park at the Airstrip there?

Hart and I have worked out a nice route as well for Saturday afternoon.

Once Hart confirms that what I have mapped in Google Maps is correct then I'll post here for the others who will hopefully join us.

Regards
Mark.

markets, airstrip and the beach - v nice spot. Run by Lanis.

Here is the link - book soon - no cabins left, just powered sites etc.

Cheers,

For all you folk travelling to Old Bar via Ellenborough Falls which are terrific, make sure you stop off at Blue Poles Art Gallery Cafe near Comboyne. Great food, great art, good coffee, fantastic ambience. Well worth the stop.Thoroughly recommend it. I agree, the country and the back roads although rough, are far better than travelling along the Pacific Hwy .

We are staying @ Manning Point at this stage as we still need a Cabin (bunk boards are still with the Department of Fair Trading as is the engineers certificate for the roof conversion).

We are also saving for one of those Just Campers driveaway awning tents which we have seen used at a few shows so that we can declutter the syncro during jaunts around the place. They are about $600.00AUD.

Manning Point is about 20kms North. Hence we will be down as much as we can.

See you all very soon.

We are going Friday now to avoid the parking lot we call a free way.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Murray

Great to hear - are you camping at the Caravan Park at the Airstrip there?

Hart and I have worked out a nice route as well for Saturday afternoon.

Once Hart confirms that what I have mapped in Google Maps is correct then I'll post here for the others who will hopefully join us.

Regards
Mark.

Hi Murray

I posted a link a while back - at the Caravan Park right between the
markets, airstrip and the beach - v nice spot. Run by Lanis.

Here is the link - book soon - no cabins left, just powered sites etc.

Scott,

One of the most consistent enquiries I have had since starting this group five years ago is about camping conversions.  I would be interested to know details about the camping conversion to help keep myself up to date on the little that is now available for the T3.

Apropos of bed boards, most conversions came with a couple of flimsy sheets of ply for the upstairs bunk.  The few manufacturers who made information available for the bunk would rate them as 75 kg capacity – enough for one slimmish adult or two average kids.

I drove a pop top T2 for donkeys and discarded the ply boards at a very early stage.  Apart from the load factor, there was a problem with condensation when being used as we did – on the road for several weeks at a time, both summer and winter.  My standard upstairs bed now uses hardwood slats that will hold an elephant by comparison but retain some springiness and permanently removes the condensation problem.  This has a further advantage in that the slats can be made to stand on edge and slid back to create a lot of headroom.  My bunk is 2080 mm long but concertinas to 480 mm when stowed.  (I have a Trakka pop top, which was fitted to the new vehicle and delivered as a fully featured camper.)

So please fill me in on your conversion and also let me know how the Department of Fair Trading gets to have a say in the matter.

Les

We are staying @ Manning Point at this stage as we still need a Cabin (bunk boards are still with the Department of Fair Trading as is the engineers certificate for the roof conversion).

We are also saving for one of those Just Campers driveaway awning tents which we have seen used at a few shows so that we can declutter the syncro during jaunts around the place. They are about $600.00AUD.

Manning Point is about 20kms North. Hence we will be down as much as we can.

See you all very soon.

We are going Friday now to avoid the parking lot we call a free way.

Cheers,

Scott

We've just adapted our boards upstairs to include a nice fold up fence that prevents Max rolling out and dropping onto the floor.

Will show you on the weekend.

Les,

My conversion is a Discoverer or Camperize conversion which does not cut out the front safety cell nor the rear roof strut only the central strut leaving the roof fairly structurally stable - not as stable as a tin-top version but probably the next best thing.

It is the same design as those pop-top roofs fitted to Marks syncro and Rudi's syncro.

Unfortunately only 3 weeks after I picked mine up Discoverer (Owned then by Tyson's) went into insolvency without providing my roof bunks and my engineers certificate.

The NSW Fair Trading Department has a compensation fund to cover this but they are being painful and now want me to do a stat dec about the issue signed by a JP. I don't know any JP's but I am sure I can find one locally.

In speaking to the guy from the Fair Trading Department he said the work would be approved when I get this done but that was just his words - I like things in writing.

I only want "All-Vans" to do it as they can match the velour lining installed with the roof conversion. They will be using plywood again - 18mm I think.

I will see how I like it when done before re-making it to a system similar to you - I only plan to put my daughters up there and they are 6 & 2 - and a combined weight of 36kgs. Thus I have  a few years yet before I will need to up the weight requirement for the bunk.

Also have you got a ladder system to get up there or just let those willing to climb up the cupboards?

That will be my other thing as I don't yet have my fridge cupboard back in.

My eldest is very keen to get up there for a trial run.

Scott,

Thanks for the information.

I have misgivings about the Trakka conversion, which removes all three roof bows.  If I undertook any extensive travelling in mine, I would install at least two compression braces (front and centre) in order to restore some roll-over integrity.  I had a long discussion with the designer twenty years ago about this design and he insisted that the Trakka roof “is stronger than the original”  his engineering education appears to be a bit different to mine..  When I asked him about roll-over integrity, he answered a different question and could not be brought back to the subject.

Re access to the upstairs bunk, I simply step up from the cabinets.  I prefer to sleep upstairs because I don’t have to pack away everything downstairs before I can pull out the downstairs bunk.  I did that for just one trip with the T2 and never again!  A bonus is waking up to find ten kangaroos grazing just a few paces away, unaware that they are being observed at close quarters.

Regarding the poptop conversions I have been in the process of installing a sunliner roof on my syncro and chose not to remove the middle safety cell.

The tin roof is glued to the beam with rubber cement and can be pulled off leaving just the beam. I rust treated, primed painted the entire roof. In particular the edging where I'd cut the roof as these spots are often left as bare metal when pro's do it. By chopping a small section of the fibre glass the width of the center beam and about 3cms high it allows the poptop to drop down fully and the beam is not disturbed.

Bed boards are still usable and the beam does not limit the roaming space as it is above the rear seat where standing up isn't possible anyway. The downside is I am going to have a hard time getting a home conversion approved no matter how good it's done.

I do agree with the upstairs rule.

I travelled with my Folks and brother in a bay camper for a few trips and thoroughly enjoyed the top floor sleeping.

You feel much safer up there.

I also plan to do a Fraser Island trip with the kids in a couple of years time (or earlier) and having them up in the roof instead of the tent will make me sleep safer at night with all those dingoes running around.

Just need to toilet train the little one first - I don't really want to have wee raining down on me at night.

By the way - I agree that Trakka roofs are very strong - apparently they are full of steel reinforcing which is why they weigh so much apparently - yet I agree the original structure is better.

Cheers,

Scott

Erik,

I am still in the process of try to get that - he has promised it to me but said my claim with the DFT is stalling its release.

Shouldn't be long now though - hopefully get it sorted pre Christmas.

Yep that's my Syncro on Aussieveedubbers.

It was the engineers certificate that had me have someone do the conversion rather than a DIY job - plus I really like the Discoverer/ Camperize roof design - very curved and not too bulky. It seems to add to the cars looks rather than detract from it.

Colour coding the roof makes for a professional looking job. That and a good trimmer for the headliner may get you the certificate you need.

Cheers,

Scott

Apart from the load factor, there was a problem with condensation when being used as we did - on the road for several weeks at a time, both summer and winter.

Do you really need an engineer's certificate?

Who knows when the conversion was done?

What year were engineer's certificate mandatory?

Just had that experience a few weeks ago, my brother bought a Discoverer T3 syncro that was factory converted years ago in NSW and was out of registration by 6 months in VIC.  We didn't think there would be any issue with VicRoads to get it registered but as the vehicle had to be presented for inspection, they had no record of an engineer's certificate and therefore it was not classed as motorhome and needed all the certificates, electrical, gas and engineer's VASS.

So it might not create an immediate problem (legalities aside) if you own the car and its registered but somewhere down the track a new owner will get a nasty little surprise.
